This is something we do every year and have for as long as we have been on air. We pick winners, we predict scores, and Saturday across the commonwealth, on the Kentucky News Network, our guy, Friday Night Fletch, will go on air and discuss how we fared. The below are some of the key matchups across Kentucky pitting teams from different classifications all over the commonwealth of Kentucky, literally from Ashland to Paducah and all points in between. Here is how we see it.

Here is how we see the games being played Thursday and Friday in all six (6) of Kentucky’s classifications. Many of these teams are taking on opponents out of classification which will be important when RPI’s start being calculated and classification rankings and seeding start crystalizing across the KHSAA. We will start with Kentucky Class 1A.

Holy Cross (Lou.) (1A, 4-0) at Bullitt Central (5A, 2-2)
For the upcoming matchup between Holy Cross (Louisville, KY) and Bullitt Central (Shepherdsville, KY) on Friday, September 18, 2026, Holy Cross enters the game as a heavy favorite. If you are wondering why Holy Cross has such a high RPI, it is the scheduling. Playing up this often, and this many classifications, does wonders for the old-RPI.

They are showcasing excellent balance and scoring depth.
- Bullitt Central Cougars: Bullitt Central has had a rough introduction to the 2026 season, most recently suffering a brutal 35-0 shutout loss at the hands of Bullitt East. Their offense is struggling to maintain drives, which will be a massive liability against a surging Holy Cross defense.
While last year’s meeting was an incredibly tight, 35-33 win for Holy Cross; the two programs have moved in opposite directions since. Holy Cross has significantly raised its ceiling, while Bullitt Central is struggling to find its footing.
Prediction
Holy Cross’s offensive momentum will be too much for Bullitt Central to contain, while the visitors may struggle to put up points against a confident defensive front.
Belfry (2A, 4-0) at Pikeville (1A, 3-1)
Pikeville is favored to win the highly anticipated mountain rivalry game against Belfry this Friday, September 18, 2026.

While both teams enter this Week 5 matchup as absolute powerhouses, the Pikeville Panthers hold the edge according to recent state metrics and momentum:
- The Rankings: Pikeville (3-1) recently secured the No. 1 ranking in KHSAA Class 1A following an impressive stretch that includes a 37-30 victory over Raceland and a dominant 48-19 rout of Johnson Central last week.
- The Matchup: The Belfry Pirates are also off to an exceptional start, sitting at 4-0 and ranked No. 3 in Class 2A. They have a tough defense, which was on full display during their 12-6 victory over Johnson Central earlier this month.

His play the last two weeks has been other-worldly. Best LBer at his level of play anywhere in the commonwealth.
- Jayden Justice (Pikeville, Sr., OLB/RB): Impact senior playmaker on both sides of the ball.
- Jeremiah Anderson (Pikeville,,Sr., MLB): Defensive anchor in the middle of the field at 5’10” and 215 lbs.
- Brady Ratliff (Pikeville, So., CB/SS): Talented underclassman defensive back stepping into a larger role.
- Cooper Scott (Pikeville, So., QB/SS): Dual contributor providing depth and leadership at quarterback and secondary
Raceland (2-2) at Newport Central Catholic (1-2)
Raceland is a heavy favorite over Newport Central Catholic heading into their non-district matchup on September 18, 2026. If history is any kind of teacher, it would appear the Rams will be a tough team against which to pick in this particular matchup.

The Matchup & Recent Form
- Raceland Rams (2-2): The Rams possess a potent offense that can put up points in bunches. After drops to top-tier programs like Ashland Blazer (28-21) and Pikeville (37-30), they have rebounded violently. They dismantled Pleasure Ridge Park 56-18 and are coming off a flawless 55-0 shutout against Mercer County. In a nutshell, to beat Raceland (unless you spell your name Pikeville), you have to a larger enrollment than most 1A ball clubs in the KHSAA.
- Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds (1-2): The Thoroughbreds dropped their opener 21-3 to Lloyd Memorial, but showed their explosive ceiling in a 55-28 victory over Boone County. However, consistency has plagued them, especially defensively against teams that line up and run with power which the Rams do exceedingly well.
Series History
Raceland has entirely controlled this series over the last few years. The Rams’ physicality upfront has historically caused major turnover and pacing issues for NewCath:
- 2025: Raceland won 56-27
- 2024: Raceland won 29-7
- 2023: Raceland won 40-14
Handicapping the Game
- The Line (Estimated): Raceland -20.5

Why Raceland covers: Raceland is building massive momentum off their 55-point shutout last week. Their rushing attack wears down smaller defensive fronts, which fits the exact profile of how they have beat NewCath in the past. While the Thoroughbreds have the playmakers to crack the scoreboard, their defense has not shown the ability to stop a balanced, high-octane unit like Raceland’s for four full quarters.
Prediction
Expect NewCath to keep it close early through a couple of big plays, but Raceland’s depth and strength at the line of scrimmage should turn this into a runaway in the second half.
2A
The Holy War… Lexington Christian (2A, 2-2) at Lexington Catholic (3A, 3-1)
The Eagles from Lexington Christian are coming off a big 19-point victory over a 2025, Class 4A Finalist in Franklin County. It is one thing to beat a 4A squad when you regularly compete in the 2A classification. It is another thing altogether to beat a 4A team which is royalty and regularly competes for championships at that classification.
The Lexington Christian Academy Eagles (2-2) make the short trip across town, Friday night, to face the Lexington Catholic Knights (3-1) in one of Lexington’s best rivalries. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Lexington Catholic, and PrepSpin will be live-streaming the game.
Both teams enter the matchup coming off wins and looking to build momentum as district play draws closer. Both teams are excellently coached, have excellent traditions, facilities, with instutional, district, or even diocesan support.
Lexington Catholic enters the game at 3-1 and coming off a 42-14 win over Great Crossing, a 6A school winless on the year (0-4). The Knights also own wins over Ballard (6A) and Paul Laurence Dunbar (6A), with their only loss coming against perennial state power, Boyle County (4A, defending champions). Through the first month of the season, Lexington Catholic has established itself as one of the stronger teams in Class 3A.
LCA improved to 2-2 last week with an impressive 40-21 victory over Franklin County. That win may have reminded people just how challenging the Eagles’ schedule has been through the first month of the season.
LCA has already faced unbeaten Pulaski County, unbeaten Christian Academy-Louisville, and a larger-classification North Hardin team. The Eagles now enter another rivalry matchup against a quality Lexington Catholic squad. Few small-school teams in Kentucky can match that level of early-season competition.
Lexington Catholic is slightly favored to win the upcoming September 18, 2026 matchup against Lexington Christian Academy, according to current computer power rankings and state class positioning. We, respectfully, disagree.

- Nash Whelan (LCA, QB/DB): Junior dual-threat star who anchors the offense with thousands of passing/rushing yards and makes critical impact plays on defense.
- Matthew Montgomery (LCA, OL/DL): Montgomery is a junior, interior OL who has played extensively this season along the outside at tackle. That says quite a bit about his athleticism which is exception for where he deploys. Montgomery plays some (sparingly) along the defensive front too. His value to an offensive line cannot be overstated. Montgomery possesses quick feet, excellent technique and hand placement, power, explosion, and sink and may be the definitive player, at his position, in the KHSAA. Montgomery is a two-time, all-state player who looks to make his third straight all-state team at the season’s conclusion.
- Nick Greer (LCA, Center): Greer is the KHSAA’s definitive player at the center position. He has the heft and smarts to run an OL and the nasty to deliver blocks aggressively at the point of attack. Greer is also a returning all-state performer.
- Conrad Hart (LCA, TE): Senior University of Kentucky commit providing a massive mismatch in the passing game at 6’5″ and 235 pounds.
- Daven Hood (LCA, ATH): Dynamic senior playmaker who handles key touches out of the backfield and in the open field.
- Aiden Lyons & Thomas Sizemore (LCA, LBs): Defensive leaders and top tacklers who will be tasked with slowing down the Knights’ attack.
- Eli Gann & Grady Lamonica (Lexington Catholic): Core offensive playmakers driving the Knights’ early success thus far this season.

Beechwood beats most teams just by running out on the field. Most teams are scared of Beechwood. Covington Catholic is NOT! You don’t come into Park Hills, KY and kick around the Colonels in Blue I don’t care what name is on the front of the jersey.

This game is going to be such a blowout, Central Hardin would rather just play it on Thursday instead of waiting for its beating on a Friday, like everyone else who has been tasked to play the Centurions. The closest margin for any team playing CAL this season has been 41-points (congratulations, Pikeville High). If we had to wait for these guys to schedule a team which might stay on the field with them, we just wouldn’t get to cover them at all.
Picking the winner here is easy money. The Centurions will win by as large a margin as it chooses. Central Hardin has as much chance of scoring in this game as most people have to pick the winner of next year’s Kentucky Derby.
