For an inaugural journey through Kentuck’s largest classification, the first win didn’t take too terribly long and came on the road playing a ranked Tennessee opponent. Oh well, we do study this topic sufficiently to know a few things about a few things. The win was glorious and somewhat unexpected as the Tigers were at least two TD underdogs by most services which handicap high school football games. Burgess played well with a Pick 6, a pass broken up, 81-kick-off return yards, and six overall tackles. Burgess was a three phase contributor and had a stamp all over his team’s efforts. Burgess also claims our third, in-season (2026), Lasater’s Player of the Week Award. Enjoy the feature.

I was on a podcast and remarked that one of the superlative athletes rostered on the Christian County Tigers team needed to stand up and be “Daddy.” Every team has a dog and perhaps we learned on the road at McKenzie that Jalen Ray is ours. The Tigers got a big win, its first program win, on the road against a ranked TN opponent and one has to wonder aloud what this does for the season prospects from this point forward? This week our jacket patch goes to s senior WR who came up “big time” when it mattered most, Jalen Ray. Ray will be expected to be prepared, be ready, and to perform at a very high level as this journey we call the 2026 football season continues. If you don’t know they play a little football in Bardstown, KY you have never read my book, “Kentucky’s All-Time HS FB Coaches and a Few More I Liked” nor have you heard of Garnis Martin. The Point is…they have been fielding quality football teams around Bardstown since they had a school named My Old Kentucky Home High. Bardstown is staring to look very formidable again this season as they have gotten off to a 3-0 start. The Tigers are being led by a combo RB,QB named Elijah Young and the 5’10, 190-pound sophomore is posting some all-time marks particularly passing the ball. This usually is a pretty fun article. A few days ago we posted the “KPGFootball Scorecard.” On that document we memorialized the matchup and just who we believed would win and why. What we do in the scorecard is give you the solution. What we don’t do is demonstrate how we worked the problem. We are doing something a little different this year. We will highlight individual performances like last season but we also want to give fans a “scouting report” on some of the pivotal games. This week we look at the overall performance of the defense through the first two games. The team has played a 6A, talented roster in North Hardin, and a 5A finalist from a year ago in Pukaski County and has only surrendered 14-points all year long. As soon as we get the full thrust of the offense figured out and unpacked, this will make for one heck of a 2A ball club heading into the playoffs. Haden Wise brings something to the table programs desperately need, particularly programs competing at the 2A classification. Haden Wise has a very versatile skill set with a variety of talents which lend itself well to playing multiple sports. Wise was among the offensive leaders for the Falcons football team this past Friday night as he played QB out of necessity for his team in its first win of the season. Wise, who also plays baseball (3rd base and catcher) employs skills which lend naturally (and specifically) to playing football. Wise’s multi-faceted, athletic tool belt makes him more, not less, recruitable to colleges around the commonwealth. Enjoy this feature.

With apologies to the late Yogi Berra, you will have to forgive us if what happened Friday night in Hartsville felt a little like déjà vu all over again… For what amounts to the third season in succession, the Wildcats have lost its starting QB in either the opener or the second game. In stepped Jacob Stewart, a precocious, young freshman QB called upon to lead the varsity offense in a year where he didn’t expect to be doing such things. It just goes to show, one has to be omnipresently prepared, ready. This week our jacket patch goes to the young freshman thrust into the lineup against a tough road game with a bigger road game looming. He will be expected to be prepared, to be ready, and to perform. What are the chances the Beechwood Tigers are going to bring back an all-time football coach and then lose his opening game back on the home sideline? As the British would say, “Not bloody likely!” Beechwood opened up last night in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky against a Cincinnati, Ohio team in Indian Hill (Braves) who were coming off a 13-1 season in ’25 with plenty of talent returning. Indian Hill was a slight favorite entering the game. We took Beechwood at home because of Rash, because of Wake commit Emmett Queen at QB, because of Tyler Fryman (WR/ATH, UK commit), and because of Nathan Pabst (uncommitted) at WR/ATH. Mostly, we took Beechwood because we believe in the quality of KHSAA football and its depth and its quality of play and quality of competition. You might say that is the product we pedal, both day in and day out. Enjoy the read.
