I was on a podcast and remarked that one of the superlative athletes rostered on the Christian County Tigers team needed to stand up and be “Daddy.” Every team has a dog and perhaps we learned on the road at McKenzie that Jalen Ray is ours. The Tigers got a big win, its first program win, on the road against a ranked TN opponent and one has to wonder aloud what this does for the season prospects from this point forward? This week our jacket patch goes to s senior WR who came up “big time” when it mattered most, Jalen Ray. Ray will be expected to be prepared, be ready, and to perform at a very high level as this journey we call the 2026 football season continues. This usually is a pretty fun article. A few days ago we posted the “KPGFootball Scorecard.” On that document we memorialized the matchup and just who we believed would win and why. What we do in the scorecard is give you the solution. What we don’t do is demonstrate how we worked the problem. Thursdays, during the football season, we often publish an article which “shows our math.” If you read this article you will see why we picked the teams we picked to win and why we picked the teams we picked to lose. We are in the Dead Period and decided to look back on a kid we publicized and helped win “Mr. Football” back in the day. This article was written back in 2018, after he attended our Mountain All-State combine and had come off a freshman season where he made our Freshman All-State Football Team. We were on this cat early. He turned into everything we could have ever hoped he would be and won Mr. Football his senior year after leading Coach Haywood, and his Belfry team, to. Haywood’s eighth (8th) KHSAA title. Enjoy this look back at one of our all-time favorite players who starred at one of our favorite programs for one of our all-time favorite coaches. No one saw the importance of what we provide and believed in our product more than Coach Haywood. God do we miss him!

There will be those who will tell you the newly consolidated “Tigers,” from Christian County High, will go as far next season as players like Tremayne Clay can lead them. Clay is a talent and one of five (5) former Hoptown Tigers to make the Big Ass Fans’s Large School, All-State Football Team. The newly consolidated school shouldn’t hurt for talent and the Tigers are amassing an array of coaching talent to “put the team through its paces” in its upcoming inaugural season. Regardless, Clay will be critical. Good thing he is also extremely talented. Back the old days, coaches generally (particularly in high school) would take the best athlete and make him the QB. After all, let your best athlete handled the ball most of the time, right? Coach McPeek is familiar. He’s been around a while. Last year, the year before hiring McPeek, Eminence High had Deegan Ortega at QB. While there he threw for three TDs, ran for five scores, was the second leading scorer and contributed some tackles along the way. What is in store for ’26? You may see Ortega at QB some more but we believe his next level home will be at WR or DB. He is 6’2,” 180, carries a 3.3-GPA, and is one of the best athletes on any field he enters.
