’27 PK delivers overtime victory in school’s first Homecoming
Some stories just sort of write themselves. The Christian County Tigers had their backs against the wall. They were playing a McCracken team highly regarded among 6A brethren, who entered the game 5-2, who had beaten Murray High (among others), and who were believed to be the “class of district one.” The Tigers just couldn’t absorb a second district loss in a three team district. So the Tigers did what literally no one believed the team could do…they won. They not only won, they relied on the leg and foot of the team’s only female member, who trotted out onto the field in overtime, in front of thousands of spectators, and broke McCracken County’s collective hearts. There ought to be a movie about this. Perhaps one day, there will be.

The Bank of Cadiz & Trust Company, based in Cadiz, Kentucky, was founded August 7, 1970. The bank obtained trust powers in 1978.
It is a locally owned, independent bank which has expanded, through the years, to locations in Hopkinsville and Murray in addition to Cadiz. The Bank of Cadiz & Trust Company has focused on community finance and dealing face-to-face with both families and small-business owners while fulfilling customer needs and the dreams of area families and businesses regardless of size or construct.
We, like our area schools, strive for high performance and finding ways to prosper in an ever-changing economic environment. The Bank of Cadiz & Trust Company remains committed to superior performance goals coupled with an exceptional quality of customer service.
’27 PK Jayleigh Campbell was among the young, high school athletes who also rendered a superior performance while achieving exceptional quality this past weekend in her team’s first program, Homecoming game and win against one 6A’s more highly regarded and ranked teams. The senior placekicker became the ultimate hero of the night by kicking the game-winning 24-yard field goal, in overtime.
Well, that is the reason Campbell get’s this week’s jacket patch and is our featured player of the week. If history should repeat itself, and should her performance continue on at this clip, and should Campbell continue to improve as many would anticipate, she may well find herself on 2026’s Big Ass Fans, Large School, All-State Football Team. I mean, who knows…?

Hopkinsville, KY: You know, you don’t get but one first, all-time, Homecoming game. The newly consolidated school scheduled its inaugural homecoming opponent to be one of the district’s premier programs.
McCracken County High is a school which entered the game 5-2 and counted some pretty impressive work among its five wins. The Mustangs owned wins over the likes of Logan County, Northeast High (TN), Union County, and Murray High with a narrow, one-point loss, on 9/11, to “Mighty Mayfield.”
For those of you who are newbies to Western Kentucky, HS football; that is some fine work against traditionally tough opponents. You don’t play the likes of Mayfield, Murray, and Logan County without cinching up your “big boy britches.”
McCracken County rode into Hopkinsville, Kentucky considerably favored to ride back out with a pivotal district win. This hypothetical win would virtually sew up for the Mustangs a home first round playoff game and a road trip for the Tigers. In theory, there was little for which to play. I mean, we all knew who would likely win.
Football games are played on turf/grass fields; not in theory. Christian County pulled off something, Friday night, that virtually no one (outside their own locker room) would have believed them capable. The Tigers slew the district-one giant, one of 6A’s more highly regarded and ranked teams, the McCracken County Mustangs.
Campbell’s kick won the Tigers its initial Homecoming game!

The Tigers benefited from some fine play from several of its players in addition to Campbell:

- Jaylen Ray: Made the critical defensive play of the game by intercepting a pass on the very first play of overtime to prevent McCracken County from scoring. Earlier in the game, he also caught a 30-yard touchdown pass.
- Paul Abren: Powered the offense by scoring two rushing touchdowns (a 1-yard run and a 2-yard run) to give the Tigers a 13-0 lead at halftime, and later converted a crucial 2-point conversion.
- Jasiah McCarley: Was the quarterback who threw the 30-yard touchdown pass to Jaylen Ray in the fourth quarter to temporarily reclaim the lead.
Those performances aside, the most remarkable of the bunch was the contribution of senior placekicker, female star on the varsity soccer team, Jayleigh Campbell. The senior placekicker became the ultimate hero of the night by kicking the game-winning 24-yard field goal in overtime.
She won her team the Homecoming game, on the game’s last play, securing for her team a chance to play a round one playoff game, at home. They should cut her in on the gate receipts.
Let’s just hope Jayleigh Campbell continues to demonstrate the skills and ability she has shown, thus far, during the ’26 football season which landed her toeing the line to win the game at the most pivotal moment of the night. Campbell’s continued development should really help establish this program as a district contender in its classification.
