The Lions are off to a fantastic start at 3-1 with its lone loss being to a ranked 1A team (Holy Cross) by a single point in the season opener on its brand new, 62-million dollar stadium. Since then, the Lions have roared including beating the pants off the defending 1A champions, Kentucky County Day, 34-7 in its second week. Well, Thursday night, the Lions won its first home game, beating Marion County 41-6 behind the strong play of its ’27 QB, Brian Dickerson, Jr. Can this team, which was practicing on asphalt parking lots and un-manicured fields really contend for a championship in its district and at the regional level under Coach George Durant, Jr.? For an inaugural journey through Kentuck’s largest classification, the first win didn’t take too terribly long and came on the road playing a ranked Tennessee opponent. Oh well, we do study this topic sufficiently to know a few things about a few things. The win was glorious and somewhat unexpected as the Tigers were at least two TD underdogs by most services which handicap high school football games. Burgess played well with a Pick 6, a pass broken up, 81-kick-off return yards, and six overall tackles. Burgess was a three phase contributor and had a stamp all over his team’s efforts. Burgess also claims our third, in-season (2026), Lasater’s Player of the Week Award. Enjoy the feature.

If you don’t know they play a little football in Bardstown, KY you have never read my book, “Kentucky’s All-Time HS FB Coaches and a Few More I Liked” nor have you heard of Garnis Martin. The Point is…they have been fielding quality football teams around Bardstown since they had a school named My Old Kentucky Home High. Bardstown is staring to look very formidable again this season as they have gotten off to a 3-0 start. The Tigers are being led by a combo RB,QB named Elijah Young and the 5’10, 190-pound sophomore is posting some all-time marks particularly passing the ball. With apologies to the late Yogi Berra, you will have to forgive us if what happened Friday night in Hartsville felt a little like déjà vu all over again… For what amounts to the third season in succession, the Wildcats have lost its starting QB in either the opener or the second game. In stepped Jacob Stewart, a precocious, young freshman QB called upon to lead the varsity offense in a year where he didn’t expect to be doing such things. It just goes to show, one has to be omnipresently prepared, ready. This week our jacket patch goes to the young freshman thrust into the lineup against a tough road game with a bigger road game looming. He will be expected to be prepared, to be ready, and to perform. We are doing something a little different this year. We will highlight individual performances like last season but we also want to give fans a “scouting report” on some of the pivotal games. This week, at the Rebel Bowl, the Eagles will play a team and be cast in an unfamiliar role; the role of “underdog,” a role to which LCA isn’t very accustomed. However, if the Eagles can emerge from this game 2-0, with consecutive wins over a quality 6A squad (North Hardin) and a 5A finalist from 2025 (Pulaski County), think of the boost it will provide the team’s RPI!
