This usually is a pretty fun article. A few days ago we posted the “KPGFootball Scorecard.” On that document we memorialized the matchup and just who we believed would win and why. What we do in the scorecard is give you the solution. What we don’t do is demonstrate how we worked the problem. Thursdays, during the football season, we often publish an article which “shows our math.” If you read this article you will see why we picked the teams we picked to win and why we picked the teams we picked to lose. We are doing something a little different this year. We will highlight individual performances like last season but we also want to give fans a “scouting report” on some of the pivotal games. This week we look at the overall performance of the defense through the first two games. The team has played a 6A, talented roster in North Hardin, and a 5A finalist from a year ago in Pukaski County and has only surrendered 14-points all year long. As soon as we get the full thrust of the offense figured out and unpacked, this will make for one heck of a 2A ball club heading into the playoffs. Haden Wise brings something to the table programs desperately need, particularly programs competing at the 2A classification. Haden Wise has a very versatile skill set with a variety of talents which lend itself well to playing multiple sports. Wise was among the offensive leaders for the Falcons football team this past Friday night as he played QB out of necessity for his team in its first win of the season. Wise, who also plays baseball (3rd base and catcher) employs skills which lend naturally (and specifically) to playing football. Wise’s multi-faceted, athletic tool belt makes him more, not less, recruitable to colleges around the commonwealth. Enjoy this feature.

With apologies to the late Yogi Berra, you will have to forgive us if what happened Friday night in Hartsville felt a little like déjà vu all over again… For what amounts to the third season in succession, the Wildcats have lost its starting QB in either the opener or the second game. In stepped Jacob Stewart, a precocious, young freshman QB called upon to lead the varsity offense in a year where he didn’t expect to be doing such things. It just goes to show, one has to be omnipresently prepared, ready. This week our jacket patch goes to the young freshman thrust into the lineup against a tough road game with a bigger road game looming. He will be expected to be prepared, to be ready, and to perform. What are the chances the Beechwood Tigers are going to bring back an all-time football coach and then lose his opening game back on the home sideline? As the British would say, “Not bloody likely!” Beechwood opened up last night in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky against a Cincinnati, Ohio team in Indian Hill (Braves) who were coming off a 13-1 season in ’25 with plenty of talent returning. Indian Hill was a slight favorite entering the game. We took Beechwood at home because of Rash, because of Wake commit Emmett Queen at QB, because of Tyler Fryman (WR/ATH, UK commit), and because of Nathan Pabst (uncommitted) at WR/ATH. Mostly, we took Beechwood because we believe in the quality of KHSAA football and its depth and its quality of play and quality of competition. You might say that is the product we pedal, both day in and day out. Enjoy the read.

Bruce Willis, a dual-threat, 2027 QB from West Tennessee who moved (luckily) into Murray High’s district this offseason, led his new team to an impressive, 58-50, double-overtime victory over Class 5A, first District contender Owensboro Apollo. Willis looks in firm control of Melvin Cunningham’s offense and able to deliver the type offensive production necessary for the Tigers to make another run at the Class 3A, KHSAA football title this year. Willis doesn’t throw it quite as well as last year’s QB (Wyatt Robbins) but he runs it better and the result in a dynamic, versatile offense that will be hard for 3A, western KY defenses to manage. Jake Morita is a weapon defensively at the second level of the Spartan defense. In addition to playing TE on offense, the 6’2, 205-pound junior mans a linebacker post and holds down a 4.2-GPA in a very ambitious and difficult college preparatory curriculum. Sayre had a big opener last night against a team which is defending at the 1A level and only returned three (3) starters, per side, from off its championship roster from a year ago.
