If you don’t know they play a little football in Bardstown, KY you have never read my book, “Kentucky’s All-Time HS FB Coaches and a Few More I Liked” nor have you heard of Garnis Martin. The Point is…they have been fielding quality football teams around Bardstown since they had a school named My Old Kentucky Home High. Bardstown is staring to look very formidable again this season as they have gotten off to a 3-0 start. The Tigers are being led by a combo RB,QB named Elijah Young and the 5’10, 190-pound sophomore is posting some all-time marks particularly passing the ball. This usually is a pretty fun article. A few days ago we posted the “KPGFootball Scorecard.” On that document we memorialized the matchup and just who we believed would win and why. What we do in the scorecard is give you the solution. What we don’t do is demonstrate how we worked the problem. We are doing something a little different this year. We will highlight individual performances like last season but we also want to give fans a “scouting report” on some of the pivotal games. This week we look at the overall performance of the defense through the first two games. The team has played a 6A, talented roster in North Hardin, and a 5A finalist from a year ago in Pukaski County and has only surrendered 14-points all year long. As soon as we get the full thrust of the offense figured out and unpacked, this will make for one heck of a 2A ball club heading into the playoffs. Haden Wise brings something to the table programs desperately need, particularly programs competing at the 2A classification. Haden Wise has a very versatile skill set with a variety of talents which lend itself well to playing multiple sports. Wise was among the offensive leaders for the Falcons football team this past Friday night as he played QB out of necessity for his team in its first win of the season. Wise, who also plays baseball (3rd base and catcher) employs skills which lend naturally (and specifically) to playing football. Wise’s multi-faceted, athletic tool belt makes him more, not less, recruitable to colleges around the commonwealth. Enjoy this feature.

Jake Morita is a weapon defensively at the second level of the Spartan defense. In addition to playing TE on offense, the 6’2, 205-pound junior mans a linebacker post and holds down a 4.2-GPA in a very ambitious and difficult college preparatory curriculum. Sayre had a big opener last night against a team which is defending at the 1A level and only returned three (3) starters, per side, from off its championship roster from a year ago.
