Lloyd Memorial is a team which has been overlooked as a potential 3A title contender. It is not our fault, we had them No. 3 on our preseason top-team’s poll coming into the season. Lincoln Tomlinson was the headliner coming into the year. Well, his classmate, Colten Barger (’28) looks as though he may have etched his name on the stud-wall in the locker room so far this year. The Juggernauts are 6-0 and have ripped through both a 5A team (Collins) and a 6A squad (Campbell County). With four regular season games left, this Juggernaut of a team may be headed to 10-0 and quite a few playoff games at home. Enjoy this look at a main reason why.

This usually is a pretty fun article. A few days ago we posted the “KPGFootball Scorecard.” On that document we memorialized the matchup and just who we believed would win and why. What we do in the scorecard is give you the solution. What we don’t do is demonstrate how we worked the problem. Thursdays, during the football season, we often publish an article which “shows our math.” If you read this article you will see why we picked the teams we picked to win and why we picked the teams we picked to lose. Louisivlle’s Ja’Hyde Brown (Christian Academy-Louisville) is coming off quite a game for his Centurions against a 6A opponent in Hardin County, Kentucky (Central Hardin). Brown logged 6 receptions for 158 yards and 4 receiving touchdowns (receptions of 31, 51, 65, and 14 yards). He also returned a punt for a touchdown, totaling 5 touchdowns on the night. That is the type performance which leads a young player to the Atlantic Coast Conference and an NIL check to play for the homesteading Louisville Cardinals. Brown is a “Mr. Football” candidate and his candidacy is hard to argue against, except for the possible exception the team would be about as lethal with or without him, but that isn’t his fault. The Centurion roster is loaded with playmakers at about every position. Enjoy this look at a kid for whom the sky is literally the limit.

The Lions are off to a fantastic start at 3-1 with its lone loss being to a ranked 1A team (Holy Cross) by a single point in the season opener on its brand new, 62-million dollar stadium. Since then, the Lions have roared including beating the pants off the defending 1A champions, Kentucky County Day, 34-7 in its second week. Well, Thursday night, the Lions won its first home game, beating Marion County 41-6 behind the strong play of its ’27 QB, Brian Dickerson, Jr. Can this team, which was practicing on asphalt parking lots and un-manicured fields really contend for a championship in its district and at the regional level under Coach George Durant, Jr.? Bruce Willis, a dual-threat, 2027 QB from West Tennessee who moved (luckily) into Murray High’s district this offseason, led his new team to an impressive, 58-50, double-overtime victory over Class 5A, first District contender Owensboro Apollo. Willis looks in firm control of Melvin Cunningham’s offense and able to deliver the type offensive production necessary for the Tigers to make another run at the Class 3A, KHSAA football title this year. Willis doesn’t throw it quite as well as last year’s QB (Wyatt Robbins) but he runs it better and the result in a dynamic, versatile offense that will be hard for 3A, western KY defenses to manage. Jake Morita is a weapon defensively at the second level of the Spartan defense. In addition to playing TE on offense, the 6’2, 205-pound junior mans a linebacker post and holds down a 4.2-GPA in a very ambitious and difficult college preparatory curriculum. Sayre had a big opener last night against a team which is defending at the 1A level and only returned three (3) starters, per side, from off its championship roster from a year ago.
