We have been calling Isaiah Messer Cruz “The Cruz Missile” around our offices. Cruz didn’t come into the year expecting to play QB necessarily but there is no denying he is playing it effectively and well. On a night where Haden Wise gained over 200-yards rushing, scored twice, and led the Falcons to a 44-12 district win over Todd County Central, Cruz, with his 59-yard aerial to Levi Kruse, still found a way to help his team reclaim the lead in a ball game which the Falcons badly needed after having dropped the Army Bowl to Fort Knox a few weeks ago. Cruz was among the offensive leaders for the Falcons football team this past Friday night as he played QB and led the team to its third win of the year. Cruz, who also wrestles, employs skills which lend naturally (and specifically) to playing football. Cruz’s multi-faceted, athletic tool belt makes him more, not less, recruitable to colleges around the commonwealth. Enjoy this feature.

Sometimes individual performances give rise to promise and expectation for the future even where it came in an unsuccessful bid for a victory. This past weekend the Trigg County Wildcats were hammered by a Caldwell team which has looked good all season in the 139-Bowl. That loss aside, and dropping to 1-4 on the year aside, the Wildcats still found elements about which to feel like there its considerable promise for the future under legendary coach, Curtis Higgins. MarQayvion Green had a strong night rushing the football and Caden Scott, who has come off injury, showed resilience under heavy pressure, shrugging off sack attempts to keep plays moving in the second half. These young kids getting all these valuable live game reps will pay off before too much longer. It just goes to show, one has to be omnipresently prepared, ready. This week our jacket patch goes to the young freshman who played like anything but a freshman (MarQayvion Green). He has been expected this year to be prepared, to be ready, and to perform and, thus far, he hasn’t disappointed. Louisivlle’s Ja’Hyde Brown (Christian Academy-Louisville) is coming off quite a game for his Centurions against a 6A opponent in Hardin County, Kentucky (Central Hardin). Brown logged 6 receptions for 158 yards and 4 receiving touchdowns (receptions of 31, 51, 65, and 14 yards). He also returned a punt for a touchdown, totaling 5 touchdowns on the night. That is the type performance which leads a young player to the Atlantic Coast Conference and an NIL check to play for the homesteading Louisville Cardinals. Brown is a “Mr. Football” candidate and his candidacy is hard to argue against, except for the possible exception the team would be about as lethal with or without him, but that isn’t his fault. The Centurion roster is loaded with playmakers at about every position. Enjoy this look at a kid for whom the sky is literally the limit.

Through four games, the Tigers stand at 2-2, coming off consecutive road wins, and playing much better football by any estimation. The defense was particularly stout this past Friday night in the district opener for both schools, Christian County at Daviess County in Owensboro. The Tigers embark on an important stretch, coming home to play one of 6A’s better teams in South Warren before traveling to Lexington, the 25th of September, to play Frederick Douglass on “The Farm.” Obviously, if the young Tigers could split those two games it would be a huge boost to the team’s psyche and prospects heading into the end of the regular season and the playoffs. The defensive unit of the Tigers really played exceptionally this week to earn our Lasater’s Player of the Week Honors. Enjoy the feature.

I was watching a college football game on television last night (September 12, 2026) and Georgia Tech had a monster at TE who couldn’t be stopped. Over and over again the Ramblin’ Wreck kept targeting this 6’9,” 270 pounder over the middle of the defense. It was impressive. I would have run it until someone showed me it could be stopped or even slowed a bit. The kid for Georgia Tech was named Kevin Roche, Jr. and he hailed from Connecticut. Murray High has such a TE and his name is Owen Howell. Howell is a 6’4,” 220-pounder with a 4.7-GPA and a 29 on his ACT. The Lions are off to a fantastic start at 3-1 with its lone loss being to a ranked 1A team (Holy Cross) by a single point in the season opener on its brand new, 62-million dollar stadium. Since then, the Lions have roared including beating the pants off the defending 1A champions, Kentucky County Day, 34-7 in its second week. Well, Thursday night, the Lions won its first home game, beating Marion County 41-6 behind the strong play of its ’27 QB, Brian Dickerson, Jr. Can this team, which was practicing on asphalt parking lots and un-manicured fields really contend for a championship in its district and at the regional level under Coach George Durant, Jr.? Not every 5’11,” 180 pound high school WR is the same. Some of them have a vertical of 37-inches, bench press 245, squat (lbs): 425, power cleans (lbs) 235, and are in the graduating class of 2028.
