KPGFootball handicaps the matchup between DuBois Academy and Lexington Christian (October 2, 2026)
To say the Eagles, from Lexington’s Christian Academy, have started out the ’26 season with a difficult trek is a bit of an understatement. The Eagles stand at 3-2 and are coming off an off week following its stirring victory in the Holy War against Lexington Catholic (28-27, OT). The Eagles will entertain a district opponent in W.E.B. DuBois Academy which is 5-1, a couple points from 6-0, and a team ranked No. 6 in the latest RPI. However, iron sharpens iron as we commonly say and this week the Eagles draw another tough opponent and District heavyweight. This is another one of those great seeding opportunities to get to play games at home come playoff time and the Eagles better not be either looking past this ball club or still hung over from its stirring, overtime victory over Catholic. We aren’t sure how many of you remember this, but KPGFootball may have been the only Kentucky-wide publication which came out on the record and picked the Eagles to win the title last season (2025). We didn’t panic when the team came out of the gates losing three of its first four. We aren’t panicking now with the team standing at 2-2 through four of the toughest games any small school in Kentucky has perhaps ever started out playing in any singular season. This schedule has been brutal.
Iron sharpens iron. We knew the tough early season schedule would pay off dividends in 2025 when it got to playoff time. We were right and believe the similar course of action, in 2026, may well net a similar result.
The 2A classification will be a tough league in 2026 and boasts as many top-flight, top-notch teams as any other class in the commonwealth. There are literally 11-teams who could take home the title with four to five at the top capable of beating the other depending on factors as rudimentary as the location of the game.
Lexington, KY: We are coming off a bye week post a stirring victory, 28-27, over cross town, 3A powerhouse Lexington Catholic in a game dubbed, “The Holy War.” We have competed out of class for much of the year and now it is important to take care of our fourth (4th) district brethren. This first opponent visiting is a tough one.
W.E.B. DuBois Academy lost a one-pointer to open the season to an undefeated, Holy Cross (Lou.) team. Holy Cross is the top-rated team in the 1A classification according to the KHSAA RPI. That particular ratings index is the one used for seeding purposes come the playoffs.
Both teams enter the matchup red hot with the Lions being the talk of the Commonwealth so far this season. Both teams are looking to build momentum as district play opens. Both teams are excellently coached, have excellent traditions, facilities, with instutional, district, or even diocesan support.
Neither team can afford to look past this matchup. A win here, for DuBois, would make quite the statement across Kentucky. A win here by the Lions would go a long way toward garnering the respect the program believes it has amply earned.
We are going to kind of give you the tale of the tape between the two teams. Then, we are going to pick a score and a winner. Won’t this be fun?
