We love versatility and have learned the college scouts agree. That is why it is important for kids wanting to be recruited to compete in a variety of sports and not just the one. Haden Wise from Fort Campbell could tell you all about it. Wise is a senior who has played LB and some WR but found himself at RB owing to necessity and performing very well with over 200-yards rushing and two (2) TDs on 27-carries. Wise not only had the prodigious offensive night but registered a pair of tackles, a sack, and an INT on top of the contributions he made on offense. The same skill sets employed to play the multiple sports played by Wise are the same skills requisite to thriving in football. Oak Grove, KY: We have said many times there are sports, aside from football, which lend well to developing skills important for the grid iron. That is the very reason college coaches encourage high school athletes to compete in more than just the one sport that athlete is hoping will ultimately pay his way toward a diploma.
Let’s talk about baseball as a “for instance.” Haden Wise is a talented, 5’10,” 180-pound LB, QB, WR, RB prospect. Wise is not only a star on the Falcons’s football roster but a first rate diamond dandy (baseball) too.
Wise plays the hot corner (3rd base) and also plays hind-catcher in baseball. You may have never before considered that both of these positions require the development of attributes which lend well to playing football. We will explain.
To man the hot corner, an athlete has to develop quick reflexes, agility, mental toughness, footwork, courage, and situational awareness. All of those attributes are common to playing linebacker specifically and football in general.
You don’t think it takes courage to man the hot corner? Do you know why third base is called the hot corner?
Shorten up for a play at the plate, one time, and have a smoke-swinging, oxen of a right-handed batter pull an inside fastball, timed up just right, down the line at your head. Have that happen once or twice and get back to us.
What about playing catcher? Think about the sink it requires, and the hips required, to play football with the leverage necessary to win the low man battle at the point of attack. Think about the hips required to take on the lead blocker, to scrape or shed your way to a tackle at the defensive second level. Then think about the hips required to catch a baseball game.
Nine innings squatted down will loosen those hips. Nine innings firing to a standing position and humming the ball down to second or third will develop explosion, strong legs, and good hips. You know what we always say, Loose hips get college football scholarships.

Hayden Wise has the courage to flourish at the hot corner in baseball and at LB in football to go with his play on offense at QB, RB, and WR
So, how have those skills translated for Haden Wise this season. Statistically, about as well as the Falcons could have hoped.
We talked with head football coach Henry Mitchell about his hotshot, multi-sport, versatile skill-set star. Mitchell told KPGFootball, Haden Wise has come in as back-up QB when Isaiah Messer Cruz got injured in the Northwest game. Wise has definitely given this offense the spark it needed.
Mitchell continued, Wise is proving he is the early MVP of the team. Wise is commanding the offense like a General on a battlefield. Wise delivers results from multiple positions in multiple phases of the game.
Haden Wise rushed for 206 yards and two (2) touchdowns on 27 carries on offense against Todd County. Wise registered a pair of tackles, a sack, and an INT to prove pivotal for his team on that side of the ball too.

Todd County Central left the evening dragging along a ’26 mid-season mark of 0-5 which fell to 0-6 with its forfeit this past weekend to Mayfield. Caldwell County, on the other hand, heads to a date with Mayfield sporting a 6-0 mark.
Sure Caldwell beat Fort Campbell handily this past Friday night. However, Caldwell may be the cream of the crop at the 2A level on the western end of Kentucky. This upcoming trip to Mayfield (and the Tigers will show up) will tell us a bunch.
The Caldwell/Mayfield battle appears to be for whom will be the new bully on the western front in the 2A classification’s first district. Will it be the traditional bullies (Mayfield) or the upstarts (Caldwell)?
In the meantime, Wise might have found a home at RB the remainder of the season. You know, physical studs like Wise are good at triggering offensive attacks and RB is a good place from which to trigger any high school offense.
It’s not just a football-thing. It is a sports thing!
Identifying potential multi-sport superstars is tantamount to getting the Fort Campbell football team prepared for the challenges ahead. That is why this particular Falcon is our Lasaters Coffee & Tea, Wake Up and Smell the Coffee Player of the Week.
