’30 RB grinding out 70 yards on the ground against a tough Caldwell defense

Sometimes heroic efforts can be yielded from unsuccessful outcomes. In 1956, Paul Hornung, originally from Louisville, Kentucky won the Heisman trophy in spite of playing on a Notre Dame team which finished the season 2-8. Hornung is still the only Heisman winner in the award’s history to play on a losing team. John Majors, from Tennessee (the runner-up) wasn’t too pleased. His Volunteer team had gone 10-1, losing in the Sugar Bowl to Baylor. Come to think of it, Syracuse’s Jim Brown probably wasn’t pleased either as many thought it should have been Brown, and neither Hornung nor Majors, who should have one the Heisman in 1956. Regardless, Hornung set the standard for toiling valiantly in spite of not meeting with much team success. ’30 RB, MarQayvion Green was among the young, high school athletes who also rendered a superior performance while achieving exceptional quality this past weekend in his team’s tough loss to Caldwell County in the 139-Bowl at Perdue Field. Green gained a tough 70-yards rushing against a stingy Tiger defense while teammate and QB, Cade Scott, back from injury shrugged off some sack attempts to keep plays alive in the second half.

Well, that is the reason Green get’s this season’s fifth jacket patch and is our featured player of the week. If history should repeat itself, and should his performance continue on at this clip, and should Green continue to improve as many would anticipate, Green may find himself on a future Big Ass Fans, Small School, All-State Football Team one of these years. I mean, who knows…?

Cadiz, KY: Well something familiar happened Friday night at Perdue Field in Cadiz, Kentucky. Two teams, Caldwell County and Trigg County played its annual 139-Bowl. The win was Caldwell’s 14th straight over Trigg in a series that dates back to 1954. The Wildcats haven’t beaten the Tigers since 2012.

Freshman, MarQayvion Green had an inspiring game and junior QB, Cade Scott, was able to contribute some fine play in spite of Trigg dropping the contest 56-14. Of course, not all losses happen without some extraordinarily fine efforts expended in a losing cause.

Ask Notre Dame. One of the Irish legends, Paul Hornung (from Louisville, KY), won a Heisman Trophy toiling on behalf of a 2-8 ball club in 1956, just two years after the 139-Bowl debuted. A player on a “losing team” to win a Heisman is something which has only happened once in history and not something likely to ever again occur.

This past weekend, the Trigg County Wildcats ran straight into a buzz saw. The Caldwell County Tigers, boasting some impressive talent of their own, particularly young talent, strutted out to a 56-14 victory in Cadiz, Kentucky. The Tigers have staked itself to an impressive 5-0 mark at the regular season’s mid-point with a trip to Mayfield looming in just a couple weeks.

The Caldwell County Tigers used a dominant second-quarter surge at Perdue Field to pull away from the Trigg County Wildcats. Key contributors in the victory included quarterback Daelyn Landers alongside touchdown scorers Cam Wilson, Drew Stevens, and Dayton Wilson.

Young Tigers, Bryson “Cowboy” Ford, Kam “Ox” Wells, and Ty “The Jet” Palmer have played inspiringly for Caldwell just as Jacob Stewart and MarQayvion Green have done for Trigg County. There its a youth movement alive and well among area football stars.

It is good to see. It will provide fascination and entertainment for years to come.

Green grinder out 70-tough yards rushing against the Caldwell County run box in spite of getting his hat turned around several times on the night. Caden Scott was forced to shrug off a persistent surge from the middle of the line and persistent pressure to keep plays alive particularly in the second half. The efforts though not ultimately successful, were still noteworthy and indicative of a fighting spirit and never surrender attitude which may serve the Wildcats well going forward.

Caldwell is now 5-0 and has a trip upcoming to play a tough Fort Campbell (3-2) team which has a storied tradition and plenty of motivation. Should Caldwell get past the Falcons, another road trip (this one to Mayfield, KY) awaits on October 2 with the District title on the line.

Trigg County (1-4) gets Todd County in Elkton, a game where the Wildcats will be significantly favored. Todd County is coming off a throttling at the hands of (you guessed it) Fort Campbell.

We know this, the Wildcats will be excellently coached and excellently prepared. We like this program’s track record. We love this program’s trajectory.

This season will go along way in answering questions. Regardless, seeing the answers revealed should prove entirely interesting. 

Let’s just hope MarQayvion Green continues to demonstrate the skills and ability he has shown, thus far, in the first half of the ’26 football season which landed him on the field just when the team most needed him. Green’s continued development would really help establish this program as a district contender in its classification in upcoming seasons and be a big boost into this year’s playoffs.
