This usually is a pretty fun article. A few days ago we posted the “KPGFootball Scorecard.” On that document we memorialized the matchup and just who we believed would win and why. What we do in the scorecard is give you the solution. What we don’t do is demonstrate how we worked the problem. Thursdays, during the football season, we often publish an article which “shows our math.” If you read this article you will see why we picked the teams we picked to win and why we picked the teams we picked to lose. We have identified in the offseason and leading up to the season’s commencement some star guys we foretold would “break out” this year. We are over half way through (6-8 games in) and bracing for the stretch run before the playoffs and many of these guys are doing exactly what we forecast they would be doing. We are approaching for most teams the fifth or sixth game of the year. District play either started last night or begins for most teams next Friday Night. Point is, it is getting serious. We believe Pikeville is right in the thick of the 1A race, their record (3-3) notwithstanding. The polls around the Bluegrass would indicate we aren’t the only ones. There is something which seems to have worked well all year that the Panthers need to continue (in our opinion). Get the ball to Mikey Hager! He won’t let you down, we certify that as a FACT. Hillard Howard is a mountain coaching legend. He was a Kentucky “Golden Gloves” title holder, a two-time title holder in West Virginia, and the national “Golden Gloves” title holder in 1970. He retired from coaching with a 244-69-1 overall record and a 3-2 mark in state title games. Before retiring to Florida, he started the program at Letcher County Central and posted 10-1, 10-2, and 11-3 his last three seasons. The guy was just a winner as assuredly as I live in the “Pennyroyal” region of the commonwealth of Kentucky. Enoy the feature.

Has there been a better RB in the KHSAA over the past several years than Senior, Blake Birchfield. Not for our money! Birchfield has his Panthers knocking on the door of yet another title. Jayden Justice is a middle school kid who everyone across Kentucky is already discussing. With Future Stars tryouts ongoing there is little doubt this LBer will be representing Kentucky this summer in the Tennessee-Kentucky Future Stars Classic. Year after year Pikeville High School has talent come off its bus which defies all logic in evaluating a Kentucky 1A roster. We would suppose that is why the Panthers are perpetually in the Title hunt at the 1A classification in football. Wade Hensley, and talent very much like him, promises the Panthers are likely to be in the hunt in ’22 also. Enjoy this feature. HB.
