’27 ATH had a big game and in multiple phases for his Tigers
Christian County’s Tavares Burgess is among the better players on the newly consolidated Christian County Tigers roster. Matter of fact, Burgess is a premier athlete playing KHSAA football in the 6A classification anywhere in the western end of the commonwealth of Kentucky. There aren’t too many three-phase guys playing 6A football anyway as most coaches of rosters that size prefer to platoon. However, there are some players who have to stay on the field. Play your players as is commonly said. Burgess is a player and, Friday night, his skills were on full exhibition in McKenzie, Tennessee for all to see. Do you who were watching? Lassaters Coffee & Tea
Hopkinsville, KY: The newly minted Christian County Tigers went on the road to play a Tennessee opponent in hostile territory. Sure, McKenzie may have been a 1A Tennessee enrollment; but, they were runners-up in the TSSAA a season ago, sported a Mr. Football semi-finalist at QB (Cole Brown), and entered the contest the second ranked team in Tennessee at its level of play. Just because the enrollment is small doesn’t mean the team can’t ball.
The newly minted Tigers will start pulled away in the third and fourth quarters reversing a trend of fading with the game on the line as it had sort of done in the first two weeks. It was an impressive, road performance.
Programs often have to learn how to win. This is especially true where the program is taking its maiden voyage in a season at its brand new high school. The Christian County Tigers, in McKenzie, TN this past Friday night, looked eerily like a program which might well have turned a corner.
That were some fine individual performances turned in by members of the consolidated roster. One of those fine performances was from Tavares Burgess, a ’27 ATH and multi-phase contributor.
Burgess’ performance was pretty special. On the night, Burgess housed an interception, had two rushing attempts totaling 38-yards, broke up a pass, registered 6-tackles, and registered over 80-yards in kick returns. If you count that up, that is three phase contribution reserved only for special athletes playing KHSAA football at the “big boy” level (6A).
That type utility and service are chief among the reasons Burgess is among the better football players in the surrounding area. It is also why Burgess is our Lasaters Coffee & Tea Player of the Week.
