We have wandered through the wasteland and into a football season…Predicted District Winners for the 6A and 5A Classifications…(Featured Photograph Brendon Miller, Bluegrass Sports Nation)

We have wandered through the abyss that is the KHSAA “Dead Period” and into the first day of real preparation for the 2019 season. We call this the “first day” as (for most high schools) June practice is volitional. There is nothing volitional about July practice. We will be hard at it all the way up and to the August openers.

This is our first installment of a three part series where we will (boldly, we might add) predict each and every district winner before the season even begins. We will start and Class 6A and work our way down doing two classifications a day. Today we break down the 6A and 5A classifications. Enjoy the series and join us tomorrow for Classes 4A and 3A.

We thought it would be fun to predict the respective district champions for all 6 Kentucky classifications today and see, at the end of the year, how we did…

Class 6A

District One…

Frankly, McCracken has by and large owned this particular district. Owensboro Apollo comes up from Class 5A and joins the district but KPGFootball doesn’t think the Eagles addition to the district particularly changes its likely champion. KPGFootball predicts McCracken County to win this District.

District Two…

North Hardin has some of the elite talent anywhere in the commonwealth of Kentucky between Octavious Oxendine, LaVell Wright, and Darren Green. Meade County has struggled the last two years, finishing below .500 two years straight. However, you can count on one hand the amount of times the Green Wave have finished below .500 since it began playing football.

Meade County has had one of Indiana’s very top running back prospects in Austin Opel transfer onto the roster. Opel gained over 1,500 yards from scrimmage a year ago playing Indiana, Class 6A football. Additionally, two of 21s very best in JJ Richardson and JT Godsey dot the roster. In a little bit of an upset…KPGFootball predicts Meade County to win this district.

District Three…

The easiest thing to do here is just go with Saint Xavier. Don’t they always win District Three? However, Manual has been stock-piling talent from out of the Louisville Youth League coffers for several years and have one of Kentucky’s most dynamic receivers in Eli Blakey and Josh Johnson will be a freshman this year and is one of Kentucky’s very best DEs coming out of middle school. Manual may still be a year away. KPGFootball predicts Saint X to win this district…

District Four…

Talk about your teams owning a particular district, Louisville Male may have the easiest ride to a district crown in the entire classification. If Male doesn’t win the fourth district, we may pull a Dickie V and stand on our heads on television. KPGFootball predicts Louisville Male to win this district…

District Five…

The easy thing to do here is pick Louisville Trinity to win this district as they seemingly always do. Trinity lost seven ball games last year but still make it to the State-semis in one of its all-time, worst seasons. Louisville Eastern is usually weak but Ballard has some of the best individual talent in Louisville like Justice Thompson for instance. Ballard can beat any team in Kentucky at any given time especially with how they play on defense. KPGFootball predicts Louisville Trinity to win this district…

District Six…

This district appears to be owned by Simon Kenton. While SK lost over 20 seniors from off its 10-3 ball club in 2018, the only real competitor for the District crown appears to be Campbell County. KPGFootball predicts Simon Kenton to win this district…

District Seven…

This district a year ago was a battle between Henry Clay and Tates Creek. When the class of the district is 6-6, with not a single team finishing with a higher number on the left side of the margin than the right, its a battle of the “Have Nots” mostly. We like Henry Clay to win that battle again this year. KPGFootball predicts Henry Clay to win this district…

District Eight…

Madison Central, a state Semi-finalist in 2018 in the 6A classification, is clearly still the team to beat here. Madison Central was 10-4 a year ago and will be quite formidable again this upcoming season. KPGFootball predicts Madison Central to win this district…

Class 5A…

District One…

Here is a little nugget of information for you about Owensboro Senior High. Immonte Owsley suffered injury at Purdue University’s prospect camp and has been lost for the year. That is one of the most explosive and exciting playmakers in the entire western-end of Kentucky. His loss will mean absolutely nothing, District-wise, as Owensboro could win District One with its JV. They still have Austin Gough, 2021s top linebacker (in our opinion), and a bevy of other stars from out of the best middle school program in Kentucky. KPGFootball predicts Owensboro Senior High School to win this district…

District Two…Remember when Christian County could really play football? This district looks to be a battle between South Warren and Bowling Green for the foreseeable future with the Colonels battling it out with Greenwood to stay out of the cellar. South Warren won the entire classification a year ago and went 15-0 along the way. They sustained key losses at key positions from linebacker (Pete Cross), to the DL (Jacob Lacey), to DB (Clayton Bush), to QB (Gavin Spurrier). Bowling Green still has one of Kentucky’s top TEs in Jordan Dingle and its very best DB in DeVito Tisdale. We like the Purples this year. KPGFootball predicts Bowling Green Senior High School to win this district…

District Three…We like Bullitt Central, who finished 7-5 a year ago. Their main competition appears to be either Fairdale or Doss and neither of them are going to be very good this upcoming year in our humble opinion. KPGFootball predicts Buillett Central High School to win this district…

District Four…Clearly South Oldham is the class of this District and Region. It appears the Dragons are regular entrants into the Semis. They have some real talent with players the likes of Keaton Martin and Ethan Bednarczyk returning. This is the year to which the Dragon faithful have been pointing as South’s year for several years. Atherton will make some noise with first year head man Nino White at the controls. Atherton might overtake South as the team in this District in the next few years but it won’t be 2019. KPGFootball predicts South Oldham High School to win this district…

District Five…District Five always is and will always be a Highlands/Covington Catholic battle. Highlands is catching up to Covington Catholic and is getting close to where it used to be, the class of the entire commonwealth in football. The Bluebirds won’t overtake Catholic this year however. KPGFootball predicts Covington Catholic High School to win this district…

District Six…Frederick Douglass High School has Jager Burton, Walker Parks, and Dekel Crowdus on its roster and no body else in Kentucky does. Will this win them a State Championship? Don’t know, they finished 11-1 in Class 6A in 2018 losing to State-finalist, Scott County by a single point in round two. In a bit of misfortune, Scott County also moved down to Class 5A. They went 11-4 and lost to Male in the State Championship game. Still, we have to go back to Frederick Douglass having Crowdus, Burton, and Parks. How do you overcome talent like that with the youngest two (Crowdus, Burton) being 2021ers? KPGFootball predicts Frederick Douglass High School to win this district…

District Seven…Madison Southern had been the king of this District until slipping to 2-9 a year ago. The Jessimines (East and West) were both 4-7 a year ago in Class 4A, Collins was 1-10 in 4A in 2018, and Woodford County was 2-9 in 2018 in Class 5A. This District seems set up for Madison Southern to take control of it especially with Southern boasting one of Kentucky’s very best interior O-Linemen in Duane Jackson. KPGFootball predicts Madison Southern High School to win this district…

District Eight…

Southwestern had been playing mighty good football under Head Coach Larry French. They were 10-3 in 2018. Well, somehow, French got lured away by Middlesboro, who’s fortunes are almost certain to be brighter with him at the helm. Southwestern still appears to be plenty capable to us to win this District this coming Fall if they weren’t in the same District as Jake Sloan’s Pulaski County. Pulaski, 11-3 a year ago, has one of the top athletes and WR’s in all of Kentucky back for another tour in Sloan and he is now sporting an EKU offer. Something made French bolt to Middlesboro and that something just may well have been Coach John Hines’ Marroons. KPGFootball predicts Pulaski High School to win this district…

There it is folks, the 6A and 5A classifications broken down for you. Join us tomorrow as we feature the 4A and 3A classifications.
