’29 ATH looks to grow into his familial role as a Tiger FG star
Tavares Burgess is an athlete who, in spite of being only 5’7,” 155-pounds still runs a 4.58-second, 40 yard dash; shuttles (5-10-5) in 4.37-seconds; runs the 100-meters in 11.81; while bench pressing 180-ponds, and squatting a cool 390. Burgess had a solid sophomore season for a 7-5, Class 6A, First District football team which will be consolidating with its cross-town rival to commence play in the Fall of 2026. This is a guy who may tend to get overlooked because he is small; but, his performance is pretty, dad-burn huge. Look out for “old No. 28” to burst onto the scene and look for Burgess to be a three (3) phase guy as the newly minted “Christian County Tigers” begin play. If you love versatility skill sets, this is your guy!

Hopkinsville (Christian County), KY: We would be the first to acknowledge the last season ever for the Hopkinsville High School football program went fairly well. The Tigers won seven (7) games, made the second round of the playoffs, and showed out against some pretty stiff competition a year ago playing in the largest classification of competition in the KHSAA.

Hopkinsville will be combining forces with the cross-town Christian County Colonels. Both teams have some young talent on hand which should come in handy going forward.
Tavares Burgess is a young kid coming off his sophomore season who has plenty of skill sets which recommend itself to football stardom. Burgess got run in all 12 varsity games a year ago. As his frame lengthen, heightens, and fills out, and as he grows into some “man muscles,” both his promise and ceiling appears capable of reaching incredible heights.
Tavaress Burgess is a guy who played both safety and wide receiver and got a few carries, running jet, in the ground game from scrimmage. Burgess registered 25-tackles a year ago and picked off a pass. It would appear to us his involvement in the attack is only going to increase and in multiple phases over his coming junior season. Getting on the field as a sophomore, at the 6A level, was an achievement all its own.
Will Tavares Burgess turn out to be as good as he looked at times over the course of his sophomore season? It is hard to say, but the young rising junior is plenty skilled and athletic. The young bull is developing physically and growing into a promising frame already pressing around one-buck, eighty (180-pounds) and squatting 390.
Burgess is a track & field sprinter in addition to his football skills. In track, Burgess runs the 100-meters in 11.81-seconds. Track times are fully automated. Burgess’s time will improve as he both lengthens and continues to develop.
We would like to see Burgess’s 60-meter time. We don’t know whether or not he competes in that event, but short legged athletes like Burgess generally use the 60-meter time to corroborate the 40-time, which at 4.58-seconds is flying for a 5’7″ sophomore/rising junior. That 4.37-second shuttle connotes the Burgess kid is both athletic and specially twitchy and quick.
The Hoptown Tigers were a pretty good ball club in ’25 and the conglomerated school promises to be even better in ’26

Track & field (spring sport) has a long history as a beneficial, offseason endeavor for football players looking to gain a competitive advantage on the gridiron. We cover track & field offseason as part of our year round football coverage.
Burgess is avid and active in the weight room and willing to train to both harness and develop his physical prowess. This kid needs to get bigger, taller, longer, and thicker. The offseason is a great time for such emphasis.
Burgess may come back this coming Fall looking altogether different than when he left out in the Spring. That is what is so great about player development. The unknowns make high school football exciting.
As Forrest Gump said about life, Football is like a box of chocolates; you just never know what you’re going to get. Amen.
Like so many other area, young players Burgess is a fine young man, both on and off the football field. That is quite a mouthful, as Burgess is plenty skilled, plenty athletic. It will become even more of a statement as he fills out and matures.
One reason we settled on him for this offseason feature is his being the type of citizen and student a community can both support and commend. Burgess is just a great kid.
Identifying a potential weapon like Tavares Burgess, may give the new Christian County Tigers an advantage over some other newly minted teams in the 6A classification throughout the KHSAA. That is why Tavares Burgess from Christian County High, is this week’s Lasaters Coffee & Tea, Wake Up and Smell the Coffee Feature of the Week.
We feel it is high time for people around Christian County, KY to take notice of this outstanding young Tiger, Tavares Burgess, and some of the Tigers’ other outstanding performers. Hey Christian County Tigers, as far as Tavares Burgess is concerned; it’s time to wake up and smell the coffee!
