’27 big-bodied TE having quite the senior season
I was watching a college football game on television last night (September 12, 2026) and Georgia Tech had a monster at TE who couldn’t be stopped. Over and over again the Ramblin’ Wreck kept targeting this 6’9,” 270 pounder blocker/pass-catcher over the middle of the defense. It was impressive. I would have run it until someone showed me it could be stopped or slowed; then again, I am a little different breed of cat (or so I am told). The kid for Georgia Tech was named Kevin Roche, Jr. and he hailed from Connecticut. Murray High has such a TE and his name is Owen Howell. Howell is a 6’4,” 220-pounder with a 4.7-GPA and a 29 on his ACT. Scores like that and you can gain admission to Georgia Tech or anywhere else you might want to go. ’27 TE, Owen Howell was among the young, high school athletes who also rendered a superior performance while achieving exceptional quality this past weekend in his team’s 49-8 win over a 5A Marshall County team. Howell snagged a five-yard scoring pass, with 5:12 remaining in the game Friday night, to bring a running clock into effect for the rest of the game. Not a ton of 3A teams run the clock on 5A opponents. Not a lot of 3A teams have the talent nor tradition of Murray High.
Well, that is the reason Howell get’s this season’s fourth jacket patch and is our featured player of the week. If history should repeat itself, and should his performance continue on at this clip as many would anticipate, Howell may find himself on our Big Ass Fans, Small School, All-State Football Team at year’s end.

Murray, KY: Melvin Cunningham has done a tremendous job upon accepting the reigns to the Murray High Tiger football program. The Tigers played for the ’25, Class 3A title at Kroger Field and are looking to get back there and see if they can’t come away with a title.
First, the Tigers will have to replace a QB in Wyatt Robbins who was so good he made our small school, All-State FB team a year ago and is now playing for the Murray State Racers.
The Tigers also have to develop some down-field targets to augment the team’s offensive attack and double pronged monster of a scoring machine. We believe Owen Howell at TE, a ’27 prospect, certainly fits the bill and quite well.
Bruce Willis, a ’27 transfer QB who has been awarded this same distinction, has been playing well. Friday night, his excellent play continued.
Murray High remained unbeaten (4-0) with a 49-8 road win over Marshall County this past Friday night. Bruce Willis led the Tigers with three (3) touchdown passes, 186 passing yards, and 118 yards on the ground. Murray is back home next Friday to host Russellville.
Owen Howell, a ’27 TE prospect at the TE slot, has been playing well this season. Friday night, Howell snagged a five (5)-yard scoring pass, with 5:12 remaining, to run the clock for the game’s remainder.
It is called the “Mercy rule.” Under that rule, in KHSAA football games when one team gets 35 or more points ahead of the other, the clock runs continuously for the game’s remainder. Murray has been showing very little mercy for opponents nearly half way into the ’26 regular season.
Athletes like Howell are why the Tigers have very little quarter to show any opponent. Howell is 6’4,” weighs 220-pounds, and can long snap and play TE. Howell runs a forty in 5.22-seconds, verticals 29-inches, presses a couple plates (225-pounds), squats 315, and runs the 100-meter in 13.26-seconds.
His 4.7-GPA and 29-ACT score make him a take at anything from service academies to the Ivy-league and the Near-Ivies, like MIT, University of Chicago, Centre College, etc. Howell puts the student in the term, Student-Athlete, while still being quite athletic.

Bruce Willis, the talented ’27 transfer QB from Dresden had another fine outing. Heck, we can’t give him the award every week, though it almost seems fitting.
Against Marshall County, Willis led the Tigers with three (3) touchdown passes, 186 passing yards, and 118 yards on the ground. That is quite the performance.
The Tigers served notice in ’25 that it was a 3A program with which to reckon. Murray High will have a target on its back going forward. Continuing to develop talent like Howell, like Willis will be hugely important if the Tigers are to continue to climb the 3A ladder to its ultimate goal, a KHSAA championship.
Can Coach Cunningham continue the development, the same type run of successes, he has enjoyed with this program to date? If Coach Cunningham is to do that, he will need sustained brilliant flashes similar to what we saw from his big-bodied, senior TE/LS, Owen Howell, in the team’s fourth victory against Marshall County.
Look out, Russellville. You’re next!
We know this, the Tigers will be excellently coached and excellently prepared. We like this program’s track record. We love this program’s trajectory.
This season will go along way in answering questions. Regardless, seeing the answers revealed should prove entirely interesting.
Let’s just hope Owen Howell continues to demonstrate the skills and ability he has shown, thus far, in the opening of the ’26 football season. That would really get this program off on the right foot!
