Head Football Coach of the Cougars quietly getting it done in Leitchfield, KY

There are some really talented, young head football coaches across the Bluegrass waiting in the wings to take over for the legends we have polishing off tremendous careers at the high school level. Steve Stonebreaker from Adair County is certainly one of them. Bryan Jones from Grayson County is another. Jones finished 10-2 in ’23 and is out of the gates 5-1 in ’24 a couple points away from undefeated. What will he do down the homestretch? If history is indication, he will make the home-folks proud!

Leitchfield, KY: Every offseason there are coaches let go across Kentucky and coaches get promoted as being the “next big thing” to fill those vacancies. Now there are names in the coaching community everyone knows: Marvin Dantzler (Louisville Central), Phillip Haywood (Belfry), Dudley Hilton (Bell County), Doug Charles (LCA), Hunter Cantwell (CAL), Sean Thompson (Tilghman High), Mark Dixon (Perry County Central), Chris Wolfe (Male), Mark Spader (Bowling Green), Brandon Smith (South Warren), Jay Cobb (Trinity), Kevin Wallace (St. Xavier), John Hines (South Laurel), and this is just off the top of my head.

These guys are well known for winning. Many of them have won multiple championships. All of their programs are successful and meet with tremendous success.

We feature Steve Stonebreaker from Adair County last week. He is killing it in Columbia, Kentucky and is sure to be on the “hot boards” in coaching searches across the commonwealth this coming offseason. Maybe you should add Bryan Jones, from Grayson County High, to the list.

Jones coaches a program in 5A, D4. His team is 5-1, just a couple points from 6-0, and has performed pretty well since his coming on board in ’19. Jones has gone 7-4, 5-3 (pandemic shortened season), 4-7, 4-7, 10-2 (last season), and is 5-1 this year.

Seneca and Breckenridge are winnable; North Bullitt will be pretty tough; Hancock County will be quite the climb

John Durden, “Durden Ratings Index”

Jones’ team will have a difficult finish. North Bullitt has already won four (4) games (4-2), Seneca is 3-3, and both are 5A programs, like Grayson. Breckenridge County is 4A and struggling, 1-5. Hancock County (Robert Eubanks, HFC) maybe the new bully on the western Kentucky, 3A-block as they are 6-0 coming off a 64-point outing against Trigg County in a first-district matchup.

Our best guess after consulting John Durden with the Durden Ratings Index…Seneca and Breckenridge are winnable. North Bullitt will be pretty tough. Hancock County will be quite the climb.

Win the winnable games and you’re 7-3. Beat a good North Bullitt team, coming off consecutive wins against Bullitt Central (by 10-points) and Seneca (32-13), and you’re 8-2. Beat Hancock County, which Fort Campbell beating Madisonville North-Hopkins has proven possible, and the Cougars are 9-1 heading for the KHSAA playoffs.

At the center of it all is a very good head football coach who has proven over the last 6-seasons he can get it done. Bryan Jones is a real up and comer, folks.

Then again, what do I know?
