Christian Shackelford is built exactly like the “big boys” want to see him. He’s 6’7,” 290-pounds and sports a 3.8-GPA. Shackelford got six (6) games of run over his sophomore season and that isn’t too bad considering LCA had the most senior laden group of trench men in the KHSAA a year ago at any level of competition. There will be plenty of competition to fill some of these holes in ’25 resulting from the Spring ’24 commencement ceremonies. Enjoy this look at a ’27 who seems destined to grow into one of his graduating class’s very best offensive linemen before it is said and done. Paul Rains won a title at LCA over Mayfield in 2009, two years after coming up just three points short to Beechwood. Rains had these guys yearly in discussion. Rains, over 29-years, won 209-games and a title while journeying all over Kentucky and competing at various classifications. No doubt in our mind Paul Rains is among the greatest of all-time football coaches across this great commonwealth. Rains was the consummate “Rambin’ Man.” Enjoy this feature and remember, in the end, we’re all just trying to make a living doing the best that we can.

We all know Phillip Haywood and Dudley Hilton are the two winningest football coaches in the KHSAA history. Haywood at 491 will be tough to catch but Hilton is 30 or so behind him and he’s still going strong. What about the guys who shone like bright, shining stars then moved on to “greener pastures.” Could some of those guys have been “the best?” Perhaps. If there is a short-timer who could be considered, we believe he may be in this particular grouping of three. Enjoy this feature.

There are some really outstanding freshmen football players who got a ton of reps during the ’24 season. There was even a ’28 kid who got 13-games of run behind the best OL unit in Kentucky at any classification. LCA’s Matthew Montgomery is a 6’0,” 230-pound guy with a 275-pound bench, a 405-pound squat, and a penchant for flattening defenders unfortunate enough to get in his pulling trajectory on traps and pulls. LCA came out the gate slowly this season. Of course the 2A powerhouse opened with the best high school team in Kentucky (any classification), Boyle County, then followed that up with a six-point loss to an always tough Franklin County (4A). The Eagles are 5-0 since to include wins over the defending 1A champion (Pikeville) and the defending 3A champion (Christian Academy-Louisville). As we come down the regular season homestretch, the Eagles are looking every bit the container we expected to see.

We have been featuring versatility this offseason and we have one for you hear. This guy plays LB,G in football as a two-way guy, wrestles, and is a middle infielder, third-baseman, outfielder, right-handed pitcher on the varsity baseball team. He also is a member of the 1,000-pound club in the weight room and all of this while having just completed his sophomore season on Kentucky’s deepest roster.
