Brody providing ‘Cherry’ play along the Centurion front @sfitz_840whas @840WHAS @minguabeefjerky @centurions_fb @THunterCantwell

’26 DL really leading the Centurions toward another 3A title quest

Brody Cherry helped lead his team to an improbable road win against a previously undefeated 6A team ranked among the very best in the commonwealth of Kentucky. Along the way, he contributed in virtually every significant statistical category. How far will Cherry and the Centurions go in ’24. It is anyone’s guess. However, for those who were ready to count them out over consecutive losses to LCA and Ryle, you have some long nights coming your way over the remainder of the regular season and the upcoming 3A playoffs.

Cherry is a word with a multitude of meanings according to the McGraw-Hill’s Dictionary of American Slang and Colloquial Expressions. Among the many meanings is a reference to something being fine, “dope,” really nice, stellar, especially when referring to a car or a fine automobile.

Cherry has come to have a meaning around the Centurion football program at the Christian Academy-Louisville all together different from a reference to a fine automobile. It is becoming the standard for outstanding play along the defensive front.

Brody Cherry, number 55 for guys ingesting Centurion game film (which better be all you 3A playoff contenders), has been playing mighty good football, though the 4-2 record may suggest otherwise for a program the ilk of CAL. The ’26 prospect really had himself a night this past Thursday when the Centurions beat down the Crimsons from duPont Manual High at duPont Manual Stadium, 35-10.

Many of you listen, I am sure, to the podcast Scott Fitzgerald and I broadcast from NewsRadio 840WHAS out of Louisville (Friday Night Kentucky). If you haven’t heard a broadcast before now, enjoy this one.

Scott asked me, I believe in episode five (5), whether Coach Hunter Cantwell (CAL) had reason to sweat dropping a second consecutive game to the Ryle Raiders (6A, 4-1). CAL won its first three over Owensboro Senior (5A), Heritage Hills (IN), and North Hardin (6A) before losing consecutive games to LCA by seven and Ryle by four.

Scott facilitates the conversation on the show. He knew the answer as assuredly as I.

Losing to LCA…and losing to Ryle…is no reason to push the panic button

Friday Night Fletch

The fact is, losing to LCA, who though 2A is a 2A elite program capable of beating anyone, and losing to Ryle, one of the better 6A teams in all of Kentucky whose lone loss was to 5A finalist in ’23, Cooper, is no reason to push the panic button for any 3A, KHSAA ball club. As Scott and I discussed, high school football is a playoff sport and CAL will enter the upcoming KHSAA, 3A playoffs, well prepared and loaded for bear regardless of its regular season mark.

I will be honest, I didn’t think much of the Centurion’s chances of beating Manual at home. I will be honest again, the Central game on October 18, 2024 at Central Stadium is very likely going to be a nail-biter. All of that aside, I knew consecutive “L’s” to LCA and Ryle was no reason to start preparing for basketball season.

Brock Cherry and his Centurions showed everyone, Thursday night, that any talk of the Centurion’s imminent demise was premature. The Centurions ran the Crimsons off its own field, 35-10. Cherry had quite the night.

Cherry registered 5-tackles, 4-TFLs, a QB-sack, and a forced fumble. Basically, Cherry made sure his every play counted. We included a link to his highlights from that game below the picture at the top of the page.

On a rainy Thursday night in Louisville, Kentucky, putting the Crimson offense well behind the sticks just about every play and sacking its QB together with forcing a fumble thereby giving his team an extra, unplanned for, possession was just what the doctor ordered. You might say the young man’s play was Cherry; like a ’69 Camaro ZL1 427cid/425hp for instance.

Then again, what do I know?
