Bryan Jones is among the hottest young coaches in the industry Kentucky-wide. He has his Cougars playing football at an incredibly high level and looking every bit like 5A threats coming down the season’s home stretch. We called him the best middle school football player in Kentucky last season. If the opener is an indication, we couldn’t have been any more on the money than we were with Bryson “Mr. B.” Johnson. Johnson had 16-tackles, 1.5-TFLs in the opener against a really good Somerset squad. While Perry County Central fans would have much preferred a different outcome, they still were enthused about the play of the young, freshman, LB.

This is Bryson Johnson and he is the best football player in 8th-grade anywhere in Kentucky. He forecasts as a LB, most likely, in high school but could find a home in the offensive backfield. It is accepted, rarely bad-mouthed, and frankly just a way of life around the Appalachia region. The Hazard Bulldogs, when they unload off the bus, just never look like how you would think a 1A team would look. They are always big, brutish, physical, well-coached, and in the 1A title-hunt. One problem they have is the emergence of district-foe, Pikeville, as the classification’s preeminent team. With young talent like Zane Deaton and Elijah Gayheart, coach Howard will find his way. Someone contacted old Coach Lyons and asked when we were going to put out our preseason top-10 football polls for each classification. Well, today seemed like as good a day as any to start.
