We call the team “Mighty Mayfield” on our radio show, “Friday Night, Kentucky” and around the offices of “KPGFootball.” There are reasons for that. One reason is the fact “Mighty Mayfield” has won 13 KHSAA football championships (1977, 1978, 1985, 1986, 1993, 1995, 2002, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2023). Another reason? Mayfield has been runners-up 13 times. Aren’t convinced? How about Mayfield High School being Kentucky’s winningest, all-time football program and the third winningest program in the United States of America (965-wins, 269-losses, 32-ties)? Having players like Josiah England doesn’t hurt either. England came off a monster sophomore season to get injured in the ’25 season’s fourth game. He is fully recovered on the radar of programs like the University of Louisville, TSU, UK, and EKU. He may also be our “dark horse” Mr. Football candidate entering his senior season.

This week our feature is about Josiah England. England is among Kentucky’s more coveted recruits and a football star at Mighty Mayfield High School. England had a fantastic, all-state caliber season as a sophomore then was derailed by injury in 2025. He should find himself in the middle of the “Mr. Football” race as the Fall of 2026 fast approaches.

Mayfield, KY: His name is Josiah England and you have probably heard of him and for several reasons. First of all, he plays on the roster of one of the more storied programs in the history of the KHSAA, a.k.a. Mighty Mayfield.
England is doing way more than holding down a roster spot. England, in his last full season in the backfield (sophomore year) carried the ball 188-times for 1,568-yards and 17-TDs in 12-games. England also caught a TD pass swinging out of the backfield. England averaged, in 2024, 8.34 yards per rushing attempt and a TD every 11th carry.
Coming forward to 2025, England was off to a fine start before tearing a hamstring early in the year. England managed 62-carries for 486-yards for an average of close to eight yards a carry with his seven TDs rushing coming out to a TD every 8.85-carries.
The argument can be fairly made that England was heading for numbers similar to or slightly better than his ’24 numbers. By the way, the ’24 production was flipping fantastic.
That begs the question, what is England likely to do in ’26 assuming he remains healthy? We predict a Mr. Football run.
England is 6’3,” and weighs in the 195-pound range. England runs the 40-yard dash in 4.49-seconds. England bench presses 265-pounds, and squats 425-pounds. Oh yeah, England carries a 3.3-GPA.
England has been projected to play either RB or corner at the next level. As for corner, England has the height, length, hips, change of direction, and straight line speed the D-1s crave at that slot. As for RB, England has great vision, explosion, separation speed, and enough “cutting ability” to thrive as an offensive player at the D-1 level.
Mayfield has exited the playoffs the last two seasons in the second round and both times at the hands of LCA (Lexington Christian Academy). Mayfield was 9-3 in ’24, losing to LCA, 47-7, in Mayfield, KY versus turning in a 10-2 worksheet, a year ago, losing to an LCA team which would ultimately win the title, in Lexington, by a score of 35-16.
Neither score is what is expected of a Mayfield football team by an understandably demanding fanbase. However, losing on the road by 19-to the eventual KHSAA champion seems a considerable step forward from losing to an LCA team, by 40 at home, which would lose the very next week in Fort Mitchell, KY (Beechwood) by twenty (44-24).
Cliff Dew has stepped aside this offseason. We don’t know whether Mayfield can get Hall of Fame coach Joe Morris to come back on the sideline or not. Either way, Mayfield High is an elite job at the high school level in football.
They will find someone. That someone will be a top-notch guy in the field of football coaching, whomever he happens to be.
