Lasaters...time to wake up and smell the coffee!

’27 ATH, two-way player, was a bright spot in a difficult final season

If the surname “Abren” sounds familiar, it should. There have been a long, distinguished line of Abrens who have been stars on the athletic fields of Hopkinsville, Kentucky for generations. You find that in small towns like Hopkinsville; year after year, decade after decade, kids with similar pedigrees and surnames re-surface, time and again, to lead area sports teams. Paul Abren is no different. Abren, accomplished in a variety of sports from wrestling, to powerlifting, to football, and who couldn’t be a finer young man and a credit to Abrens the community over, is our “Wake Up and Smell the Coffee & Tea” feature of the week. Abren has been selected both for his outstanding past play, the play we know we will see from him next year, and his just being an outstanding person.

Hopkinsville (Christian County), KY: We would be the first to acknowledge the last season ever for the Christian County Colonel High School football program didn’t go according to plan. The Colonels are only won a single game, had its playoff game with South Warren conceded, and lost games by unseemly margins against McCracken County, cross-town Hoptown (with whom the school has merged), and Tilghman High (Paducah) at Mac Wright Stadium.

While last season was abysmal, next season under the merged regime things should be considerably rosier. That shouldn’t be taken to mean Christian County’s roster was devoid of football players with ability. Nothing could have been further from the truth.

We have before written about some of the very fine, young, freshman talent the Colonels boasted; players like Bryson “Cowboy” Ford (’29)and Kam Wells (’29), a pair who played much better than their tender years would have forecasted. We have written about the fine job, first year starter at QB, Tom Johnson (’26), did under dire circumstances or his counterparts in the offensive backfield, the ’27 RBs, Deasian Harris (’27) and Tristin Dillard (’27).

Today, we wish to write about ’27 prospect, Paul Abren. Abren’s play last year, and in multiple phases of the Colonel attack, was certainly a bright spot in an otherwise dismal season.

Abren lists approximately 5’10,” with inordinately long arms (Abren family trait it would appear). Abren played around 160-pounds and toiled in all three (3) phases of the game. Abren was a leader in all the significant defensive statistics like tackles (71), TFLs (7), sacks (2), FFs (2), FRs, and PBUs (passes broken up).

Abren played on the coverage units. Abren played on the return units. Abren rarely, if ever, left the field.

Christian County struggled in 2025 but played better as the season progressed

If you look at Abren’s “tale of the tape” you will readily see from where his prowess commenced. For starters, Abren has competed in track & field as a sprinter and has been an able mainstay on the wrestling mat as a grappler. Abren has also been part of the powerlifting program.

Both wrestling (winter sport) and track & field (spring sport) have long histories as beneficial, offseason endeavors for football players looking to gain competitive advantages on the gridiron. We cover both sports offseason as part of our year round football coverage.

Abren, like the Abrens who came along before him, is a war horse in the weight room. Abren has a registered bench presses of 245-pounds, can rep the high school rep weight (185) on the bench 10-times, and squats 455-pounds.

Abren has wrestled at the 138-pound division, so his lifting numbers coming while wrestling, makes his numbers even more impressive. Abren is a better young man, off the field, than the player he is when on it.

One reason we settled on him for this offseason feature is his being the type of citizen and student a community can both support and commend. He’s just a great kid.

Identifying a potential weapon like Paul Abren, may give the new Christian County Tigers an advantage over some other newly minted teams in 6A teams throughout the KHSAA. That is why Paul Abren from Christian County High, is this week’s Lasaters Coffee & Tea, Wake Up and Smell the Coffee Player of the Week.

We feel it is high time for people around Christian County, KY to take notice of this outstanding young Tiger, Paul Abren, and some of the Tigers’ other outstanding performers. Hey Christian County Tigers, as far as Paul Abren is concerned; it’s time to wake up and smell the coffee!
