’27 MLB/FB has been a real workhorse for the Cougars in ’26

I don’t know whether or not you have heard of Zach Wagner, nor of his McLean County Cougars, but they are playing some mighty fine football for a little school located adjacent to the “Green River” in the Western Coal Fields region of the Bluegrass. Thursday night, their ’27 MLB/FB studded out and carried his team to a pivotal and thrilling, 21-14, victory over the Hancock County Hornets. Stratton scored all three TDs for his Cougars including the one with only 9.5-seconds remaining to secure a victory which snapped a two-year losing streak to the Cougar’s bitter district rival. This win secures a home playoff game. It also cements Coach Wagner as one of the area’s better high school football coaches.

Calhoun, KY: We have a news flash for you. Zach Wagner can coach a dad-gum football team. This isn’t news to folks around McLean County.

Zach Wagner, among the best HS
football coaches in his area

McLean County is one of those teams which runs systems teams don’t see all the time with personnel perfectly suited to run it. Wagner has developed personnel and schemes well suited for each other which fit together like a hand in a glove.

McLean and Hancock County are bitter rivals. The two teams renewed that rivalry, Thursday night (October 8, 2026) at Paulsen Stadium in Calhoun, KY.

There was a lot on the line. First of all, it was a pivotal district game. Secondly, Hancock entered the game riding a two-win, winning streak in the rivals. Finally, a possible opening round, home playoff game was hanging in the balance.

McLean came through. McLean won 21-14 on the strength of three rushing TD’s by its MLB/FB, Hunter Stratton (’27), the last of which was scored with 9.5-seconds to go sealing the ultimate deal.

Tripp Hager did all he could for Hancock County. The sophomore playmaker accounted for both of the Hornet scores, and gave Hancock County the lead, on a scoop and score in the first-half Hager returned 70-yards. Hager later added another score in the second half.

The fumble call was controversial, There were many in Paulsen Stadium who believed it was an incomplete pass and, therefore, a dead ball.

Jumpin’ Jack Flash,

Oh well, someone should ask Reggie Tate. He was the Cougar QB involved in the bizarre first-half play.

Regardless, and in spite of what some teams would consider a “back breaking” mistake/missed call, or whatever else one would term it, Wagners guys got it done to push the team’s record to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in the KHSAA Class 2A, District 2 standings.

McLean is having another fine year. The Cougars are, once again, thick in contention for second district supremacy.

There is one rather significant impediment to the Cougars taking the district title in ’26. The Cougars still have to host Owensboro Catholic on the 23rd of October.

Owensboro Catholic will enter as a massive favorite in the upcoming KHSAA Class 2A District 2 clash. We will take an early look at this matchup.

Team Overview & Records

Both teams are currently coming off consecutive victories and sit atop the 2A District 2 standings, meaning this regular-season finale will decide the district title.

Game Handicapping

Jason Morris, HFC, Owens-
boro Catholic
  • The Talent Gap: The Owensboro Catholic Aces are perennial state championship contenders powered by an explosive passing game led by quarterback Dre’Mail Carothers. The Aces have completely dominated their division, routing Hancock County 61-0 and crushing Fort Knox.
  • Historical Precedent: Owensboro Catholic has historically owned this matchup. They walloped McLean County 47-6 in their last meeting and analytical models place Owensboro Catholic’s win probability at nearly 100% with a projected margin of around 42 points (48-6).
  • The Verdict: While the Cougars will have home-field advantage and extra momentum after clinching a home playoff berth, they simply lack the depth and aerial fireworks to match pace with the Aces. Expect Owensboro Catholic to win comfortably by 30+ points, covering any standard high school spread and securing the district crown.

As you can see from our handicap, the picture isn’t rosy. That aside, Wagner is a terrific coach, just like Jason Morris at O.Cath. and his boys will concede NOTHING.

Where two teams walk on a football field, either may emerge victorious. That is why we have to play the game.
