Second Day impressions from Team Kentucky Camp…

As we have striven to do through out Team Kentucky camp, we have accessed our on the ground correspondents in camp with Team Kentucky and this is what we have coming out of Day 2…

Team Kentucky-7th news…

In honor of the US Open, Saturday in a professional golf tournament is known as “moving day.” It is the day on which a golfer has to make a move up the leader board or drift back into the pack.

At Team Kentucky Future Stars camp, Thursday is moving day roster-wise. Friday is, especially when the game is held in Tennessee, reserved for banquets, bus-rides, pep-rallies, and walk-throughs. They won’t hit today, the time to gain playing time by displaying your aggressiveness and willingness to “mix it up” expired last night.

Talking to our correspondents in the 7th grade camp, we heard there were big hits a plenty in last night’s practices. Both the offense and defense took to install well and we were told to expect a well-running team on both sides of the football.

Santana Crayton and Zahron Washburn have continued to provide explosive plays, while the late-add to the roster, Jonah Adkins from Belfry, has steadily proven equally adept at blocking or providing plays in the seam from his TE slot. From all parties queried, Adkins has been a wonderful add to the roster and will make plays Saturday for Kentucky.

In team scrimmages, both Joshuah Keith and Cole Hodge had “big days” at QB. There just doesn’t seem like there has been any distance created, at all, in the race for whom will start, either under center or behind center, as the case may be.

Literally, who trots out for Kentucky’s first series at QB will be a game time, situational decision. The coaching staff has expressed equal confidence in both players.

Uriah Virzi at LB will be a player one will have to watch. He is a strong, pre-game, candidate for Defensive MVP and a big-hitting machine especially getting down hill and attacking the line of scrimmage.

Team Kentucky 8th grade news…

We continue to hear the “8th grade LB Group is very strong.” This was expected to be the strongest singular position group coming into camp and it has proven to be just that.

Carson Wright and JT Adams are the top rated LBs in the 2023 graduating class in Kentucky and Laquan McAdoo and Sam Robinson have shown they belong in the same discussion. We expect the Kentucky defense to align with 4 LBs in its base formation largely because all four of the above guys need to be on the field together.

Cade Sullivan and Jeremiah “J2” Monroe are still patrolling “No-Fly” zones in the defensive backfield. Both of these guys have been equally comfortable in zone packages or pressed up in man coverage and both have the quickness, agility, and speed to set up inside an edge receiver’s chest, flip his hips with inside position, and get over the top of any attempts to burn Kentucky vertically.

Trevon Alexander, OT, has been consistently the best lineman in Kentucky’s camp. Bradee Davidson has continued to shine up front too as both these guys will be problems for Tennessee’s front. We believe Matt Alex Ladd, from Cadiz, Kentucky has proven the best offensive center for Kentucky in this camp.

Ladd came into the week the highest rated player in Kentucky at that position and his performance this week hasn’t hurt that perception. We have also heard really good things about Evan Miller as we believe Davidson and he will bracket the front starting out Saturday at the tackle posts. We believe Davidson will be at LT and Miller at RT.

Josh Johnson continued to dominate play and set tempo. Kaden Briggs has been equally impressive and has dominated upfront. Whatever Tennessee’s plans are for throwing the football, we hope they can get it out quickly for the benefit of health.

We have heard that Sage Dawson from Danville, Kentucky has been really impressive at the QB post and may be the snap-one starter Saturday. The 8th grade running backs, Daniel Sweeney and Jaheim Williams set the pace all week in the ground game while all the QBs look comfortable throwing to WR Destin Cheirs.
