’27 combination lineman framed out like you want and heavily pursued

Gavyn Combs spells his name a bit differently than we are accustomed. Of course, the “Layne” in Betsy Layne is spelled a bit peculiar in our humble opinion. When you play for a coach named “Jarredd Jarrell,” what would you expect? When you get right down to it, the ’27 OL/DL, being 6’5,” 275, is going to mean a bunch more to his recruitment than whether “Gavyn” is spelled with an “i” or “y.” Make no mistake about it, this kid is a name you probably need to know if you are searching for ’27 DL/DE/OL talent around the Bluegrass.

Hazard,KY: Betsy Layne High school is located in Betsy Layne, Kentucky on Bobcat Boulevard. This prospect lists himself living in Hazard, KY according to his X-Account bio linked here.

That would mean Gavyn Combs, a.k.a. “The Mountain Monster” is either planning on commuting approximately an hour, one way, if his continued plan is to live in Hazard and attend Betsy Layne or he’s transferring somewhere more proximate to his new home. We don’t know the plan but staying at Betsy Layne would entail an approximately 50 and one-half mile trek down KY-680 W and KY-80.

Draw your own conclusion from this tidbit of information. We decline to speculate.

What we do know is Combs is among the more heavily recruited prospects in the KHSAA’s 2027 graduating class. That much requires absolutely no guess work nor speculation.

When you are about to enter your senior season, wherever that season may occur, and you are 6’5,” 275-pounds, an academic All-American, and ranked the ninth (9th) best OL/DL combination player by Prep RedZone you tend to get noticed. When you are a returning Big Ass Fans, Small School All-State football player, being recruited heavily is both par for the course and expected.

Combs had quite a year for the Bobcats from Betsy Layne in 2025. Combs is a nationally and Kentucky rated, top prospect in the ’27 class by Prep Red Zone. Combs has an NCSA (Next College Student Athlete) profile. We would call all of that a well publicized, high profile.

Combs has a 4.0 GPA. That, too, is darn high cotten.

To give you an idea about his movement, Combs plays defense too. On defense a year ago, Combs registered 39-tackles and a pair of TFLs.

Add all of this together and what is the sum total? What do you deduce from the addition of all of these parts?

We aren’t sure. We are sure Combs is among the more recruited linemen to play in the KHSAA’s Appalachia region in the last 5-10 years.

We are sure Combs has enviable height, enviable length. We are sure Combs has the dimensions to play outside at tackle and the thickness and “sink” to slide inside to play one of the two guard posts.

We believe Combs has the movement, leg kick, twitch, and explosion to play a ton of defense for the remainder of his high school career, and even next level, should that be the college’s decision. We also believe this guy will be one about whom we will write many more features.

Put us down for the above and take our wager. We’re letting it all ride on this stud.

See you next season…
