“He’s just a punter!” That sentiment will get you beat in a football game. It will literally cost you a championship one day, we promise. Football is a three (3) phase game and each of the three phases are critical and have to superlatively executed for any team to function at a high level. There have been three punters taken in the first round of the NFL draft. Ray Guy became the first punter ever selected in the first round of a National Football League draft when the Oakland Raiders tapped him as the 23rd player chosen in 1973. Punters are important. Kris Hughes is one bad bunny. Matter of fact, we can’t find where we have before featured him and that is somewhat alarming to us. Hughes had a tremendous sophomore season for first-year head coach Clay Clevenger and he looks to have the Briar Jumpers back on the title track, if last year’s trip to the semis, and 10-4 finish, are any indication. Dylan Lee just finished his sophomore year. It would be difficult to imagine anyone having a better sophomore season than what we just witnessed out of Lee. He is a sprinter on the track team, plays basketball, and was a three-way contributor to a 6A ball club which made it all the way to the regional finals in Kentucky’s largest classification of competition. Ethan Bowling has been a “high energy guy” since coming out of the middle school ranks one of the better thought of prospects in the region at that level of play. Leron Jackson played for the worst team in 5A and perhaps all of Kentucky. The Raiders played 11-games and got drilled 11-times. The Raiders “high water” mark for the year was dropping a game to Trimble County on September 22 by three TDs. That doesn’t mean Keith May doesn’t have some great players in the “hopper.” Matter of fact, Coach May may (pardon the pun) be developing ’27’s premier LB and perhaps its best player at any position. They have called Kalen Washington “Jaws” since middle school. He has terrorized the football community with the same ferocity as the great white terrorized movie screens in the mid-70s.
