’27 DL framed out like you want to see them, and a killer on “Friday Nights” too!
Gavyn Combs spells his name a bit differently than we are accustomed. Of course, the “Layne” in Betsy Layne is spelled a bit peculiar in our humble opinion. When you play for a coach named “Jarredd Jarrell,” what would you expect? When you get right down to it, the ’27 DL being 6’5,” 275 is going to mean a bunch more to his recruitment than whether “Gavyn” is spelled with an “i” or “y.” This kid is tearing up around 2A and his Bobcats, from Floyd County, are coming off a nine (9) win season with a season ending loss to a rejuvenated Prestonsburg program in last year’s second round. Make no mistake about it, this kid is a name you probably need to know if you are searching for ’27 DL/DE talent around the Bluegrass.

Stanville, KY: If you like them framed out, D-1 style, we have quite a find for you here. Gavyn Combs plays for the Betsy Layne Bobcats, a Floyd County high school coming off a nine (9) win season in ’24. Combs is a ’27, which means a rising junior, as of the date of the publishing of this article.

Combs is a familiar name in mountain football. There have been a ton of men named “Combs,” all of whom seem very good at football and live around the Appalachias. Kenneth “Shorty” Combs is one of the better DE/DL to ever play at EKU and is still referenced by Colonel diehards.
Shorty has three boys named “Combs (Kory, Kylan, Kenton).” Guess what; they are all good at football too.
We don’t know if there is a consanguine relation between the “Combs” of Breathitt County and the “Combs” of Floyd County. It is certainly conceivable the two families are kin. After all, there is slightly less than 60-miles separating the two high schools.
There is something about the surname “Combs” and being terrific at football around the Appalachia area

Gavyn Combs, like the Breathitt “Combs” family, is dad-burn good at football. Combs, as a sophomore, registered 84-tackles, eight (8) TFLs, a pair of sacks, and a forced fumble. Getting young players to “play down hill” is somewhat of a chore.

Lots of young starters struggle making plays in the opponent’s backfield and forcing fumbles and accumulating other specialty statistics. This particular “Combs” did a fine job especially for a sophomore, first teamer.
Combs is framed out super well. Combs is 6’5,” 275-pounds and has considerably good weight he can add as he continues to weight train and condition. Combs is already drawing the attention of some Power Four types, UK to name just one.
Combs has made the combine circuit. Combs is a nationally and Kentucky rated top prospect in the ’27 class by Prep Red Zone and has a NCSA (Next College Student Athlete) profile. Combs hadn’t worked much on his Hudl account, but we would suggest he start posting highlights on there, right away.

Before we forget, Combs has a 4.0 GPA. That particular statistic, though often overlooked by fans, is something an academic institution will definitely covet.
College recruiters are going to be asking themselves a few questions going forward. Among those is going to be where exactly is Stanville, KY and how do I get there? The other is going to be “is that Gavyn with an ‘i’ or ‘y?'”
