Not everyone knows what position is manned by the guy in the Spread offense referred to as the “Z.” Antwoine “AJ” Wharton is manning the slot capably and it is netting big nights for teammates like the night Zamarrian Broussard turned in this past Friday in a district game between Fort Campbell and Trigg County played on Perdue Field. In Coach Higgins’ inaugural season back on the sideline, the Wildcats set making the playoff as a goal for the season. Friday night’s win over district foe, Fort Campbell, went a way toward the team’s realizing that goal. The “Z,” or the “Flanker” lines up a yard or two off the line giving it legal cushion to avoid bump-and-run coverage by corners. The “Z” often crosses the formation in pre-snap motion to reveal coverage schemes between man versus zone or create a RB/WR hybrid out of the backfield. Z’s are fast, agile, and exploit LBers or safeties. Wharton has been doing an outstanding job on the edge in the outside run game. Broussard has been reaping the benefits as has the team.
The Bank of Cadiz & Trust Company, based in Cadiz, Kentucky, was founded August 7, 1970. The bank obtained trust powers in 1978.
Bank of Cadiz
It is a locally owned, independent bank which has expanded, through the years, to locations in Hopkinsville and Murray in addition to Cadiz. The Bank of Cadiz & Trust Company has focused on community finance and dealing face-to-face with both families and small-business owners while fulfilling customer needs and the dreams of area families and businesses regardless of size or construct.
We, like our area schools, strive for high performance and finding ways to prosper in an ever-changing economic environment. The Bank of Cadiz & Trust Company remains committed to superior performance goals coupled with an exceptional quality of customer service.
A local, young, high school athlete who also rendered superior performance while achieving exceptional quality is Trigg County High’s, Antwoine “AJ” Wharton (’27) at the “Z” or flanker position. Wharton is this week’s Bank of Cadiz & Trust Company Superior Performance/Exceptional Quality Player of the Week earning a jacket patch for his Wildcats, the seventh awarded on the ’26 season.

Cadiz, KY: Head football coach, Curtis Higgins, told a rival publication, YourSportsEdge.com, that “[t]he blocking on the edge was really good.” That sort of sums it up and explains the 48-10 rout the Wildcats dished out on the Fort Campbell Falcons on Perdue Field in Cadiz the other night. It likewise accounts for how Zamarrian Broussard finished with 163 yards on only seven carries and caught four passes for 34 yards, scoring four (4) touchdowns.
Individual performances, like Broussard’s, don’t happen in a vacuum. While the player generally gets the stats (and the credit), a lot more goes into a night such as Broussard had against Fort Campbell apart from that player just being really, really good; which is the case with Broussard. Broussard is really, really good.
So is this week’s recipient, Antwoine “AJ” Wharton and his teammate, Brode Renfroe. Wharton and Renfroe, according to legendary head coach’s Curtis Higgins, did outstanding jobs on the edge for the Wildcats which netted huge gains both in the running and screen games in the team’s big district win over Fort Campbell 48-10.
Broussard took a jet sweep the other night 69-yards to pay dirt. Who helped get Broussard to the edge and down the field? Wharton and Renfroe did, that’s who.
While Broussard’s big night, 163 yards on only seven carries and four passes for 34 yards for four (4) touchdowns, looks great on the stat sheet, Broussard would tell you he didn’t do any of it alone. “Wharton did an outstanding job on the edge…” Higgins explained to YourSportsEdge.com. He must have.
That is why football is a team sport. That is why we credit the players behind the performances in addition to the players who render the performances. That is why this weekly distinction from the Bank of Cadiz & Trust Company exists, to shine a light on performances one might otherwise miss.
…and so we have…
