Sayre comes off a big battle against last year’s champion (Kentucky Country Day) looking to Jake Morita to set the pace! #Kentuckys #fletcherwlong #LeadershipLegacy #CoachingExcellence #MentorshipMatters #characterbuilding #SportsLeadership #BuildingChampions #kentuckyfootball #highschoolfootball #DisciplineAndD

’28 LB/TE has a 4.2-GPA and a huge upside!

Sayre won the 1A title in ’24. Last night, the Spartans opened with a game against Kentucky Country Day (KCD) in Louisville. KCD won the 1A title last year. There were myriad KCD fans upset the Bearcats weren’t ranked by us preseason. The reason for their omission wasn’t personal. It was simply the fact KCD returned only three (3) starters on each side of the scrimmage line. Sayre is battling to reenter commonwealth wide relevance a year after exciting the playoffs way earlier than they would have liked. Last night was the beginning of that trek. Jake Morita will play a huge role going forward from here.

Lexington, KY: Sayre School in Lexington, KY has become a powerhouse Class A program in the KHSAA. The Spartans were the 2024 champions at that level of competition.

Last night, the Spartans opened on the road playing last year’s champions, the Bearcats from Kentucky Country Day (KCD), another prestigious college preparatory school. KCD is headquartered in Louisville, the site of last night’s game.

Jake Morita figures prominently into the Spartans game plans, if the school hopes to climb back into Kentucky-wide contention. Gage Pennington is back to lead the attack and the Butler commit demonstrated there is much about this team to admire.

Sayre is dangerous with Pennington’s on the sideline and under center. That has been our experience.

Morita is 6’2,” and weighs in at 205-pounds. Morita plays TE on offense and LB on defense. Perhaps most impressively, he sports a 4.2 GPA at one of Kentucky’s more challenging college preparatory curricula.

Morita is no Johnny Come Lately either. Last season, as only a sophomore, Morita registered 28-tackles, a pair of safeties, forced a fumble, and blocked a punt. Take into account his contributions at TE and that is three phase utility, a skill set much admired by this magazine and others around the commonwealth.

Morita is highly recruitable…

Morita is the type of player we term highly recruitable. For one, his classroom performance makes him a candidate for service academies, Ivy League, and near-Ivy competition. Schools find these types attractive because packaging together academic money with football funding stretches the school’s budget much, much further.

Morita has good height and length for his projected position in college (LB) and a frame on which good weight may be added without detrimentally impacting speed, quicks, explosion, or agility. All Morita needs is to age and fill out his frame and he will be right there.

Morita is a highly skilled, plus athlete, with a varied and useful skill set. Guys like Morita, who can impact the game from several phases, are the ones we love to feature here on KPGFootball.

Hey man, it is Kentucky 1A. Gotta play your players!

Morita has gotten off to a fine start on his junior season. All he has to do is keep piling on the steam. We’ll be right here to tell you about it.
