’27 WR/DB showing great production on both sides of the football
Mason Stephens is easily one of the better 2027s playing football in the Appalachias. Stephens is 6’1,” weighs in at 160-pounds, and blisters the 40-yard dash in 4.60-seconds. Believe me when I tell you, high school wideouts playing 3A football in the mountains clipping off 40s in 4.60-seconds is “blazing a hard trail to follow.” We love Stephens’ frame, athleticism, work ethic, and speed and have no trouble predicting this prospect is on plenty of college recruiting boards as we move into the 2026 season.

Whitesburg, KY: We predicted several years ago Mason Stephens would see the offensive huddle fast in his high school career. He began his career on the defensive side.
Boy, we couldn’t have been much more right. We tend to do that, be right, at KPGFootball.

Stephens registered 30-receptions for 647-yards and nine (9) TDs on offense in 2025, his junior year. That averages over 21.5-yards a reception and a TD every third or so catch.
Stephens also played defense for the Cougars. On defense, Stephens registered 58-stops, a TFL, a FR, and a pair of picks (INTs).
None of this should be too surprising. Stephens is easily one of the better ’27s playing football in the Appalachias.

Believe me when I tell you; 3A Appalachia mountain, high school football players clipping off 40s in 4.60-seconds is plenty fast. Six-foot, one-inch tall FSs are plenty tall and long enough for any mountain defense’s back third or even split out wide for the offense passing either down the field or over the top.

We love Stephens’ frame, athleticism, work ethic, and speed. We agree with Coach Lyons. KPGFootball has no trouble predicting this prospect will be (if he isn’t already) on plenty of college recruiting boards moving into the 2026 season.
We clearly see this kid as a next level prospect. Exactly at what level and where (positionally) he fits may be a harder call.
Stephens has a 3.0-GPA so his getting past the admissions committee, most places, shouldn’t be an issue. Stephens plays free safety on defense so he has the speed, height, and length to roam center field and snag him some errant flies floating around the defensive third level.
Stephens also has the size to come up and lay down the lumber in the run game when called upon. This is a versatile skill set, the exact type of varied athletic characteristics college programs are prone to covet.
Stephens and his teammates have a tough row to hoe in the 8th district. Alan Short’s Bulldogs from Lawrence County are an 8th district team and they are coming off an impressive 11-2 worksheet in ’25.
Still, those boys from Whitesburg are tough customers. Not the least of which is our feature today, Mason Stephens.
Look out 3A, the Cougars are coming…or, at least, that is our take on it!
