’27 LB coming off ‘terrific’ junior season

Lexington Christian Academy (LCA) played a murder’s row type schedule in 2025 and still won the 2A title and finished 12-3. Of course, not all three (3) loss seasons are similarly situated. This particular one boasted an opening weekend victory over a ranked 6A team in North Hardin and a win in the “Holy War” over 3A rival, Lexington Catholic. LCA will have a target on its back the entire ’26 Fall and it would be unwise to overlook the pride of Lexington’s 2A classification regardless of how large of an enrollment your school may have. Enjoy this look at a rising senior LB who made a tremendous difference for this team and had his Eagles playing its best football at exactly the right time of year last season. By the way, we aren’t related and his name has an “s” my name lacks, but I would be proud to claim him.

eCampus.com was built on a simple idea: make textbooks affordable, convenient, and accessible for every student. Founded in 1999 in Lexington, KY and backed by visionary investors like Wendy’s founder Dave Thomas, the company has grown into a premier online textbook retailer for high school and college students nationwide.

Their mission has always been supporting student success both on and off the field through affordable access to the course materials they need. eCampus.com is excited to invest in our student-athletes through Kentucky Prep Gridiron (KPGFootball) which was founded to promote and assist young high school football players get promoted to “next level,” college football opportunities.

That is why eCampus.com sponsors the KPGFootballBig Man on the eCampus series. This week’s Big Man on the eCampus feature is Lexington Christian Academy’s rising junior QB, Nash Whelan (’28).

Aiden Lyons was incredible as a junior and is expected to make the most of a senior year which sees him coming off an All-State season a year ago. Lyons will continue to be a critical, second level defensive piece of one of Kentucky’s premier high school football programs and high school defenses.

Lexington Christian Academy (LCA) perennially competes for KHSAA championships at its level of play. Players driving the defense, like Aiden Lyons, are among the reasons why.

Lexington, KY: Aiden Lyons had his defensive team playing perhaps its best football at the exact right time of year in ’25. By playoff time the Eagles were rolling and LCA was able to best a tough customer, Owensboro Catholic (13-2), 33-28 in the title game.

The title was the program’s second ever. Now the Eagles get to experience being the hunted over being the hunter.

The fact is this…the Eagles were young in 2025. Many believed LCA was (at least) a year away from contending in ’25.

Their winning it all in ’25 makes the Eagles a definite threat to repeat in ’26. The Eagles have the pieces both in place and returning to do it.

Aiden Lyons was a Junior a season ago and had quite the season. Lyons developed and improved steadily throughout the campaign and registered 89-tackles, 4.5-TFLs, forced a pair of fumbles, recovered a pair of fumbles, and picked off a pass he returned some 45-yards.

Lyons was particularly fantastic in the championship game. Lyons led the defense against Owensboro Catholic with 11-stops and registered 32-tackles a year ago just in the playoffs. We call that coming through when the team most needs the boost.

The most important statistic was Lyons and cohorts leading the Eagles to the 2A title, its second all-time. In the end, that is the statistic people will most likely remember about any player who was fortunate enough to be on that roster.

Lyons is a member of one of the KHSAA’s best ’27 classes at LCA. One might say the state champion Eagles developed along the same arch as its prized ’27 LB.

Lyons is a multi-sport star at LCA. Lyons, at 6’1.5″ 190-pounds, played varsity basketball this past year and logged action in 26 of the team’s 30 games at the time this article was written (22-8). That type of athleticism is exactly for what college football programs are looking. His 4.28 GPA will ingratiate him to programs as well.

Lyons played some TE on offense. While he was mostly used for blocking and leading power around the edge, this is a guy with the athleticism to contribute to the 2nd-level passing game and even down the field on deeper routes.

As you can see Lyons’s performances improved as his experience in the lineup continued to expand resulting in Lyons getting more settled and comfortable patrolling the defensive second level. All of this benefitted his team whose best football may still be yet to come. That is a scary thought.

Like we constantly mention, linebackers don’t make plays without the front line defenders keeping OL from getting free to block and obstruct the defensive second level guys. The success of the LBs was directly related to the play of the defensive “Bigs” who had their hands in the dirt.

Friday Night Fletch

Against a gauntlet of football powers at different classes in the middle of playing one of the more difficult schedules in the KHSAA last year, Aiden Lyons proved himself among the more versatile, multiphase weapons in the game. It was fine production, indeed, for any Junior. Lyons figures to only increase that output as a senior.

We recognize LCA will have to continue to play well if the program is to continue to experience the success it had in its second championship season. That being said, we are still predicting it likely the Eagles challenge for the title in ’26 like the program customarily does annually.

We see Lyons as a next level kid or future college football player. We aren’t sure if it will be at LB or some other position and the level at which he figures to play will depend on how his frame finishes and how well his speed and “quicks” continue to develop.

Lyons is 6’1.5,” 190 now. Lyons could use another half an inch and 20 or so pounds, if he is going to be a division one, college LB.

We know this, Lyons’s performances on “Friday Nights,” as an 11th-grader, only strengthened (in our minds) our prediction concerning his future college prospects. We also know Lyons, like Montgomery about whom we persistently write, is a strong academic performer with excellent class standing and almost assuredly will be a “full qualifier,” in the NCAA clearinghouse, when the time comes.

For now, Lyons is one other thing in addition to all the other skills and assets we have highlighted. Lyons is among the very best LBs in the KHSAA’s ’27 graduating class. Lyons is also our eCampus.comBig Man on the eCampus feature of the week!

Join us next week as we feature another eCampus.com, Big Man on the eCampus. Until then, from any classroom to every field, eCampus.com delivers an easy, fast, and affordable way to order textbooks for students everywhere.
