We have been featuring the players who are jumping on in-state schools early as opposed to “waiting and seeing” whether there is room in the Inn for them at the D-1 level. We are privileged to get to participate in this weekly poll and we take our participation very seriously. This week we decided to post the poll as it comes to us without any effort to reformat it. Talk about your protein-packed performers, this 5-11, 190-pound RB/DB for Belfry High School (3A) had a quite a night this past Friday. Matter of fact, he’s having quite the year. We think he is a bone fide “Mr. Football” candidate. He’s been in the running every week for the “prize.” If a night like what he had Friday doesn’t get you a T-shirt and some beef jerky, it is hard to imagine what one has to accomplish to win the award. This young man is an excellent player along an odd front as a nose. He may have a future along the interior as an offensive lineman too in college where his defensive background will be viewed as a “plus.” Historically, converted defensive linemen make for more aggressive offensive linemen who are better finishers. The Hazard Bulldogs, when they unload off the bus, just never look like how you would think a 1A team would look. They are always big, brutish, physical, well-coached, and in the 1A title-hunt. One problem they have is the emergence of district-foe, Pikeville, as the classification’s preeminent team. With young talent like Zane Deaton and Elijah Gayheart, coach Howard will find his way.
