The Red Devils from Russell High lost a ton of production from off its 7-5 football team in ’23. They lost their leading passer, leading rusher, leading tackler, 2nd leading scorer, and 2nd leading back-end defender all in losing the one player, District POY, Ethan Pack. They lost way more than that off a team which was a couple scores from 9-3. However, let’s focus on what they return. One very valuable and versatile weapon returning is ’25’s Elijah Hankins. Ethan Warder is a prospect the Centre Colonels, among many other programs, is pursuing mightily. Warder fills the stat sheets with statistics which turn around football games. We will be very surprised if the Purples don’t repeat in ’25 as 5A title holders. Isaac Manning is a rising senior who looks poised to make a run at our end of the year, small-school (1A, 2A, & 3A) All-State football team. He is a versatile player and athlete who has the physical dimensions and speed to thrive on either side of the football or even both. There are scores of “volunteers” who selflessly give of themselves for the benefit of the middle and high school programs across Kentucky. They never get any fanfare or recognition. Well, we thought we would change that today by recognizing the incredible contributions of “Doc Long,” Hopkinsville High School’s long-standing team physician from 1976-1996. Little late in coming; but, better late than never. Friday Night Fletch!

Not all middle school players are equally constituted. Some arrive with high school, varsity ready frames to compete immediately. We would put Dylan Branson from Woodford County in that class.
