Talk about an exceptional athlete, the Kentucky high school ranks may not have one superior to Blake Birchfield. He is a guy who pitches in and helps his ball club every conceivable way. Mingua Beef Jerky admires people like that. They feed and clothe people like that too. Join us next week as we award this to another worthy player. HB.

His is one of the most recognized names in Kentucky football. Largely because his dad, Chad Pennington, who is also the head football coach of the Sayre’s program, played 10-years in the NFL, was a Heisman Trophy finalist for Marshall’s Thundering Herd, and was drafted 18th-overall, as the first QB in the 2000 NFL draft. However, his son’s ability to play the same position is drawing quite a few apt comparisons. Enjoy this look at a feature about the son and not the dad and join us again next week as we feature another outstanding candidate. HB.

Talk about your protein-packed performers, this 6-1, 180-pound WR for Pikeville High School (1A) had a night which broke two state records and came in 3rd in another statistical category. If a night like that doesn’t get you a T-shirt and some beef jerky, it is hard to imagine what one has to accomplish to win this award. Junior, Zack Lockhart had an incredible performance against Henry Clay(6A) and one we will likely never forget. Enjoy the article and join us next week as we honor another worthy recipient.

For those caught up on classification, @PikevilleHSFB (1A) travels to Lexington to play @HCHSDevilsFB (6A) Friday night. We pick the winner right here… @minguabeefjerky @PrepSpin @KyHighFootball @1776Bank

We have been telling you for years the enrollment of the high school has very little to do with how good of a football team it has in Kentucky. Well, tomorrow night, we suppose Pikeville High School (1A) will make the point for us when they travel to play Lexington’s Henry Clay High School (6A). This game won’t be close and it won’t be the team from Kentucky’s smallest classification feeling the effect of Friday night on Saturday morning. Enjoy the look brought to you like only KPGFootball can do it. HB.

In what has become a tradition at KPGFootball, we have been publishing our end of the year, MS, Freshman, and Sophomore All-State teams. They are the only teams of their like in Kentucky High School football history and we work tirelessly on them. We are coming to the end of this series. Today, we publish the sophomore offense. Keep checking the site for the defense, on which we are still working. If you have a player who you believe should be on here and he isn’t, odds-are he wasn’t nominated by one of our subscribers. Next time, you subscribe and you nominate the player and he will be considered. Otherwise, you have no one to blame but yourself buddy! HB.

Coach Lyon’s Class 1A, preseason Top-10 Football Poll…

July 24, 2019 Henry Lyon 0

Someone contacted old Coach Lyons and asked when we were going to put out our preseason top-10 football polls for each classification. Well, today seemed like as good a day as any to start. Since KPGFootball started with the top classification when picking district winners, this time we started with Class 1A.

Mountain Teams converge on Richmond, Kentucky for EKU’s Passing League Tournament…Here was our take on the Bobcats

July 16, 2019 Henry Lyon 2

We traveled with Breathitt County to EKU’s Passing League Tournament and were pleased with what we saw. First of all, this isn’t the type of event at which any Bobcat football team is going to be too proficient. It really doesn’t fit with what generally constitutes the strength of the Breathitt attack. That aside, there were some really good things we saw and we thought you would want to know. We have also included some commentary on a Pikeville squad which certainly didn’t disappoint in the performance from the Panthers we got to watch. Enjoy the article.

Part 3 of 3 of “wandering through the wasteland…” Predicted District Winners for the 2A and 1A Classifications…(Featured Photograph Brendon Miller, Bluegrass Sports Nation)

This is part three of our three-part series “Wandering through the wasteland…” Today we predict the district winners in Classes 2 and 1A. This concludes our series. I would mention Fletcher Long, formerly a writer here at KPGFootball and now working for Bluegrass Sports Nation called and said some coaches have taken strenuous exception to this analysis. To those offended, I am saddened you take offense. Still, we strive to be true to our craft and our opinion is just that…ours.
