’26 multi-phase, multi-faceted athlete being heavily pursued for his athletic talent and his intellect

Sylas Gunn is among the more recruitable athletes around the western end of Kentucky. Some of it is size (6’2, 175-pounds), some of its is length (78-inch wingspan), and some of it is intellect (3.75 GPA). His 104-tackles, six (6) TFLs, one QB-sack, and a pair of picks help recommend him at safety. His being second on the team in passing yards, TDs, and among the leaders in scoring and receptions recommend his overall athleticism. Also, chalk up his being a high school star in both track & field and basketball as other indicators of his overall athleticism. Gunn has been under the recruiting gun (pardon the pun) and a leader may be emerging. Which school is it? Hmmm….

Morton’s Gap, KY: Sylas Gunn has several intriguing opportunities in hot pursuit. Georgetown and Lindsey Wilson are ringing the phone off the hook to set up campus visits, Washington University of St. Louis has made it pretty clear an offer from them is on the horizon, and Centre College can’t get this versatile athlete on campus to showcase its program and facilities enough. Are the efforts bearing fruit? Is there a leader in the clubhouse?

First of all, it should be noted we are talking about one of the more coveted prospects on the western end of Kentucky in the KHSAA’s class of 2026. Gunn was among the leaders in passing, passing yards, passing TDs, rushing, receptions, and scoring and all of that is on offense, a side of the ball most schools don’t expect him to play next level.

Gunn was the team leader in tackles (104) and INTs (2). He was among the team leaders in TFLs (6) and QB-sacks (1). Gunn contributed on special teams too.

Three-phase utility is not something HS coaches get to see every day. In addition, Gunn was a starter on the varsity basketball team and is a star in track & field. Then, there is the matter of his 3.75 GPA and that explains the interest from the near-Ivy’s.

We were able to talk to someone close to the Gunns. They agreed to go “on the record” but only on the condition of anonymity. This guy told us, “Centre made a big impression over the course of the spring game. The facilities, the family atmosphere among the roster, and the celebration of the ’24 SAA championship with the ‘ring ceremony’ left the Gunn family impressed and singing the Colonels praises. If it was solely up to ‘Mom and Dad’ the decision might be over right now.”

The source continued, “Of course, WashU will not surrender here. Those coaches are in constant contact with Sylas, as are coaches from both Georgetown and Lindsey Wilson.”

All of this is academic until the offer hits the table. We are told Centre, were they to offer, would be a hard offer to pass but there is still plenty of time left in this recruitment.

Gunn has a big senior year ahead of him and he is getting ready to show out in ’25. We talked to Gunn and he told KPGFootball, “Centre was great and anytime I get to spend time with William Long, I count myself blessed. William is a great guy and both sells and embodies what is so appealing about the Centre experience.”

We think this one will come down to the finish line. There isn’t a bad choice among the four mentioned in this article as all four schools provide prestigious degrees and play very competitive football.

Get out your popcorn. This looks to be headed toward a riveting finale.
