Smith, a 5’11,” 215-pound ’26 w/ a 4.66-sec., 40-time & an 11.87, 100-meter, fully automated track time, gained 321-yds. and scored 5-TDs Friday night
We don’t know whether or not you’re paying any attention, but Coby Lewis has come into the Lakers football program, in his first year at the helm, and turned them completely around, 180-full degrees, from where they seemed headed at the end of last season. The difference can’t be any more drastic. The Lakers are 4-1 and headed to play a 5-0 Logan County team, in Russellville, and the game figures to be a real “show down” from what would have appeared a massacre, preseason. Lewis will have one distinct advantage over Coach Todd Addler’s ball club. Lewis will have a 215-pound, superstar football player named “Logan Smith.” At the end of the day, will that be enough? Will that comprise the difference between winning or losing? We don’t know. We shall see.

Friday Night Fletch
Murray, KY: The Lakers haven’t been this hot since former UK Wildcat and Bear Bryant disciple, Billy Mitchell, strolled its sidelines. Coby Lewis is doing a fair impression of former Calloway head football coach, and Hall of Famer, Sam Harp.
Harp’s résumé is an impressive one. Harp accumulated 326-wins and seven (7) titles at Danville High in 32-years. Harp coached, briefly, at Calloway County High before taking the Danville job.
We’ve talked to Coach Harp about Lewis and what he has done thus far, this season. Harp agrees with us, it is right impressive.
Point is, Calloway can be a tough place to win. Lewis has his Lakers 4-1 in his inaugural season at the helm coming off a winless 2024. When we say ’24 was winless, what we mean is they played 10-games where its best seasonal showing was an 18-point beat-down at home to Trigg County.
That was ’24’s high water mark. But,…that was then, this is now, and the Lakers are a red hot team with a marquee talent on the roster accompanied by a bevy of talented “other” players, up and down the lineup card.
Speaking of Logan Smith, he is someone about whom we have written a feature before now. We called him a “Dude” in that feature and we meant it.
What Coby Lewis is doing at Calloway County with the Laker football program is impressive
HOF Football Coach, Sam Harp
“Dude” is a “term of art” in football parlance. If you are unfamiliar and haven’t read Coach Harp and my book, Football 101: Boo-Boo’s a Quarterback, we have provided several links dispersed around this very article.
When we referred to Smith as a “Dude” we had performances like what he contributed against Warren East specifically in mind. Against the Raiders, Smith carried the ball 40-times for 321-yards with five (5)-TDs. Smith also caught three (3) passes and scored 30 of the team’s 57-points.
Smith played defense Friday night too. Against the Raiders, Smith did more than just “show up” on that side of the football. Smith led the team with 12-tackles, a pair of TFLs, and a FR (fumble recovery).
More importantly, Smith helped lead the Lakers to a 4-1 start, the fastest start a Laker team has gotten off to since 2016’s 6-1 seasonal commencement. The path doesn’t get easier.
All hands on deck will be the battle cry when the Lakers row their boats over to Russellville to play Logan County. Logan County is undefeated (5-0) with wins over Hart County (3A, 4-1), McCracken (6A, 2-3), and Greenwood (5A, 3-2).
No one could have anticipated these two teams would be a combined 9-1 back during the preseason. Of course, who would have thought Smith would have had the performance he rendered against Warren East?
We can’t make it any simpler than that. We’ll see you at the game!
