Calloway County High is under new direction in 2025. Coby Lewis has been brought in from off the Tilghman staff to resurrect the Laker football program. Lewis helped the “Blue Tornado” to a 15-0 mark and a 4A title a year ago and will look to build off his former head coaching experience he had at Trigg County before joining Sean Thompson’s staff in Paducah. Lewis is the right man for this job and he will not find the cupboard barren. Brayden Tupper is a stout young guy who has considerable power and strength stacked on his frame now, especially in light of his being a rising junior. Guys who bench press 290, pull 535, and clean 255 generally play around these parts. Enjoy this article about a young gun who should be on the field plenty this coming season.

This may prove to be the longest article of the series. This is already the longest series in magazine history. It is something else too. It is the most important undertaking we have ever before attempted. It is critically important we remember this guys before they fade into the dustbin of our collective memories. Jack Haskins did something in WKY we thought we would see. In a sea of “ground and pound” offenses and steady, “crowd the run box” defenses, Haskins filled the Friday Night air with leather. Of course, when you have 1989’s “Mr. Football” at QB, Pookie Jones, you have to incorporate an offensive system which complements your personnel. That is what Haskins did at Calloway County and the landscape, out west, has never looked the same. Enjoy this installment of this series featuring a guy who was a revolutionary, offensively, to the KHSAA game.

Kam Wells is a beast whose frame can virtually finish anywhere. He is strong as a bull, wins the leverage game against about anyone, has tremendous leg kick and explosion, and elite strength and power. Wells will likely have to be deployed “both ways” this coming Fall even though he will be a freshman. We have seen freshmen start at really good programs and acquit themselves very, very well. What will Wells do? We would be surprised if he did anything less than dominate many of his mirrors over the course of his initial campaign. Enjoy this feature about a kid whose performance made the unbearable heat a tad more bearable and who hopes his performance brings comfort to the home fans around Christian County, KY this upcoming Fall. Bob Redman was a true Renaissance Man in that he was able to do a variety of things while doing them all very well. Redman was among the greatest high school football coaches the Louisville area has ever known and managed to beat both St. Xavier and Trinity more than any other Louisville area coach in spite of coaching a team in one of those powerhouses’s districts in 30 of his 35-years. Redman averaged over 9-wins a season for 35-seasons. Playing against the best and most talented rosters the commonwealth of Kentucky had to offer, that is really something quite remarkable. We all know Phillip Haywood and Dudley Hilton are the two winningest football coaches in the KHSAA history. Haywood at 491 will be tough to catch but Hilton is 30 or so behind him and he’s still going strong. What about the guys who shone like bright, shining stars then moved on to “greener pastures.” Could some of those guys have been “the best?” Perhaps. If there is a short-timer who could be considered, we believe he may be in this particular grouping of three. Enjoy this feature.

Dan Haley finished his career with an overall record of 253-79-3 with stints as the head football coach at Bryan Station in Lexington, Paducah Tilghman, and Bowling Green Senior High. Haley did something else rather singular, he took every program he ever coached to the title game, winning titles in ’73 at Tilghman and ’95 at Bowling Green. His ’95 title likely stands alone as he won that title over Fort Thomas Highlands, and its enigmatic and brilliant head coaching legend, Dale Mueller (28-12). Haley won four COY’s in four (4) different decades and was enshrined in the Dawahares, KHSAA Hall of Fame in 2007. Enjoy this look at one of the finest coaches the sport has known, a guy with a real “Midas Touch.”

Sometimes the featured photo with our articles is a bit fuzzy. We will never sacrifice the image which best captures our story for “a clear picture.” We are a magazine which focuses on “the written word.” We’re story-tellers, not photographers. We just use any old photograph. There isn’t a darn thing fuzzy about Mike Holcomb and his ability to coach a high school football team. This guy is a coaching genius who was running Mumme-like offense in the Appalachias, where power run schemes go to die, before Hal Mumme ever got to UK. It is one thing to be the unofficial mayor of “Title Town.” It is quite the other to be a main reason why the town is so christened. Sam Harp is among the greatest to ever grace a sideline. Harp won 75% of his games in Danville, retired 326-106, won seven titles, and posted an unbelievable 82-21 post-season, playoff record. Along the way, he co-Authored a book with me about which no one, associated with football at the KHSAA level, can seem to stop reading. Enjoy this look at the great Sam Harp.
