Bank of Cadiz

’27 three (3) phase threat was a stalwart on defense and has more offensive to contribute

Last season, Deonatae Edison proved himself to be among the better “down-hillers” on the defensive side of the football for the Trigg County Wildcats. Edison contributed 68-tackles, 10.5-TFLs, and 5.5-sacks on defense, was heavily involved in the return and coverage units, and scored a pair of TDs rushing, a pair of TDs receiving, while gaining 228-yards rushing on 63-carries, and catching seven (7) passes for 84-yards. That is quite a mouthful for any one prospect. Deon, as he is more commonly called is a 5’10,” 200-pound RB, NG, OLB whose range of deployments alone speak to his athleticism, power, strength, explosion, and leverage. This is a “plug and play” guy who should have a huge senior season for Coach Curtis Higgins who has come home to one of his old stomping grounds.

Well, that is the reason Edison is our featured player of the week. If history should repeat itself, whatever it turns out to be will be special.

Cadiz, KY: Curtis Higgins is the “new” coach at Trigg County. That sounds like a funny thing to say as he formerly coached there over a career which landed him in the Louisville-are football coaches Hall of Fame.

Higgins has been around the game for many, many years. It has been awhile since the descriptive “new,” with the surname “Higgins,” has been used.

This wasn’t an easy job to fill. Trigg County has cycled through some impressive positional talent but injuries and circumstances seemed to have before derailed the opportunity for success of many of the team’s more recent, prior seasons.

One returning star is ’27, RB/NG/MLB, Deonatae “Deon” Edison. Edison, at 5’10,” 200-pounds is a guy who is big, thick, strong, and explosive enough for many different deployments on a high school football roster. It is a good thing, his dance card positionally seems rather full.

Trigg County returns a proven performer to trigger the Trigg offense. Caden Scott will be a junior and he has proven his athletic merit on the gridiron, hardwood (basketball), and diamond (baseball) over his high school, varsity, athletic career.

Having Edison will be equally beneficial. Last season as a junior, Edison’s varied athletic skill set was on full display.

Like Coach Lyon above detailed, Edison contributed 68-tackles, 10.5-TFLs, and 5.5-sacks on defense, was heavily involved in the return and coverage units, and scored a pair of TDs rushing, a pair of TDs receiving, while gaining 228-yards rushing on 63-carries, and catching seven (7) passes for 84-yards. That is quite a mouthful for any one prospect.

Trigg County has been forced to play substantial portions of its recent prior seasons without some of is better players owing to injury. However, if healthy, the Wildcats generally have more than enough talent to compete with its classification, region, and district.

Coach Higgins has been brought back to return the Wildcats to its former luster (or lustre for the fancy), former glory. Higgins would know all about that as he was the coach of the Wildcats over periods where the team formerly fielded some of its better units and had some of its more profound successes.

Edison and teammates will need to exhibit “short memories” if they are to get past setbacks and return to the type of seasons expected by the Wildcat faithful. Edison has demonstrated the “game play” capable of doing just that.

Trigg County has a pretty tough row to hoe. Trigg has “Mighty” Mayfield and Caldwell County both in district one.

If we have to tell you how tough Mayfield is, you might consider reading another digital magazine. Caldwell County has a vertran and accomplished group returning and a few transfers which should give the Tigers an expectation of having a superlative-type season upcoming.

Among the transfers is Bryson “Cowboy” Ford. Ford is a ’29 LB/TE who made our large team All-State team a year ago playing 6A football at Christian County. Ford will be a handful with whom to have to contend at the 2A level, that is for sure.

Edison looks to be poised to have another breakout season in 2026 similar to the one he posted in 2025

Friday Night Fletch

We believe Edison has a future as a multi-phase, all-state caliber performer. Edison has plenty of power and explosion, is a plus athlete, has good speed and spacial quickness, and has an excellent coaching staff to help develop his talents. Coach Higgins is a Hall of Fame football coach for a reason.

The Wildcats are serving notice in ’26 that it will return to being a powerhouse program with which to reckon, though it might well take a few seasons. Trigg County, with Higgins back at the controls, will have a target on its back going forward.

Can the Wildcats continue the development it has enjoyed to date? If it is to do that, it will require sustained brilliant flashes similar to what we saw a season ago from Deon Edison, and in all three (3) phases.

We know this, the Wildcats will be excellently coached and excellently prepared. We like this program’s track record. We love this program’s trajectory.

This offseason will go along way in answering questions. Regardless, seeing the answers revealed should prove entirely interesting.

Let’s just hope Deon Edison continues to demonstrate the marked improvement he showed over his junior campaign. That would really get this program off on the right foot in 2026!
