Colleges are looking for QBs like Fox Coons and who could blame them? @coons_foxx, @WoodfordFBall, @PrepRedzone, @khsaafootball, @KyhighFootball, @bigassfans, @eCampusdotcom

’27 QB from Woodford County among the position’s more productive players

Fox Coons, coming into the Fall of ’26, his last go around as a high school QB, looks to have it all. Coons has an enviable frame (6’5,” 240), a good head on his shoulders (3.0 GPA), good movement (4.9-second 40; 4.83-second shuttle), and is coming off a fantastically productive junior season (228/366, 62.3% completion rate, 3,331-yards passing in ’25, and 41-TDs against only eight-picks). Leading his team to a 12-2 finish in ’25 and semifinal, 5A berth just cements his elite level play. Coons is poised to have a huge senior season. There is no telling the plaudits which may ultimately come his way.

Versailles, KY: Dennis Johnson has always been a power run-scheme type of coach. He probably learned this hanging around his father, Alvis Johnson, Dennis’s father and among the greatest coaches this commonwealth has ever known.

That being said, great coaches can adapt their scheme to fit the strengths of the personnel. How many times have we seen evidence of coaches doing just that.

Last year, Woodford County found itself in a fairly unique position, at least for the Yellow Jacket program. Woodford County had a 6’5,” 240-pound, large, framed-out young man, with a howitzer hanging from the shoulder of his throwing arm, to trot out to the QB-position.

As a prospect, this seemed to have all the attributes colleges crave. He even had a name easy to remember for its uniqueness.

Fox Coons had quite the year. The ’27 QB made the Big Ass Fans, Large School All-State FB team, threw for over 3,300 passing yards, completed 41-TD passes, and threw a scant eight (8) INTs.

Fox threw 41-TD passes in ’25 against only eight (8) picks…

That type performance lends itself to one’s team having a fine record. One may also check that box as the Yellow Jackets were 12-2, losing in the 5A semis to an Owensboro team which was (without question) the best team in 5A a year ago by year’s end.

Coach Johnson doesn’t want regional championships to set the standard for his Yellow Jacket program. Johnson would like to measure success by Kentucky titles and KHSAA title game appearances. All we can definitely say is Coach Johnson is getting there; he’s annually threatening. We have no doubt Johnson will break through.

Putting QBs like Fox Coons under center is a start. Matter of fact, it is a fine place from which to commence a title run.

Coons has all the intangibles. Coons has just gotten back from “The Best of the Midwest Combine” where he measured 6’5,” 240 pounds, clocked a 4.9-second 40-yard dash, and pro-shuttled (5-10-5) in 4.83-seconds.

On top of all of this, and perhaps most importantly, Coons carries a 3.0-GPA. We can’t stress this enough and we don’t know when some prospects are going to heed this warning but these colleges, recruiting football players, are academic institutions, first and foremost.

It doesn’t do them any good to promise money to athletes they can’t get past the admissions committee. It does them little good to recruit athletes who can’t maintain eligibility.

Coons appears to be the entire package. Coons is good in the classroom. Coons is darn good on the football field. Coons has the build to withstand punishment and to absorb the rigors of next level football.

For now, Coons has a team to lead and a 5A title to win. Woodford County seems regularly in the discussion for 5A supremacy. They will be again in 2026.

That won’t be the only discussion. Coons will lead the discussion for all-state selection again in ’26 and there may even be the talk of launching a “Mr. Football” candidacy.
