West Carter is beginning to make quite a bit of noise around 2A’s 8th District. This team played Beechwood for a regional title a year ago and looked poised to make it, at least, that far again this coming season, pandemic permitting. We have been telling you for years the enrollment of the high school has very little to do with how good of a football team it has in Kentucky. Well, tomorrow night, we suppose Pikeville High School (1A) will make the point for us when they travel to play Lexington’s Henry Clay High School (6A). This game won’t be close and it won’t be the team from Kentucky’s smallest classification feeling the effect of Friday night on Saturday morning. Here is a game which will be tougher than it looks on paper. Everyone gets all over the top about the loss of London Stephney at QB for Bell. His loss is huge, he was a fine player. However, what is left in Bell County, post-Stepney, is still elite talent. Johnson Central suffered some losses to graduation too. This game will be a tight one. Who’s going to win? These same teams played early in 2019 in Hyden, Kentucky. Clay County won that game by 17-points. Fans can’t act like high school teams are the same year in and year out.
