Brody Wells, Knox Central, Ready for the Friday Night Lights

This Class of 2023, rising freshman WR is ready for the big stage and is projected to put up formidable numbers!

Brody Wells is coming out of a highly decorated, middle school career to compete for a spot on a varsity roster for a team which was 10-4 in 2018 and played in the Class 4A semi-finals. This would be a somewhat daunting task for many rising freshman. It is not something likely to overwhelm Brody Wells.

Brody is a 6-2 WR whose weight, we would wager, is in the 170-pound ranged. He has excellent length and separation speed, especially for a rising freshman, and soft, nimble, and receptive hands. Wells uses his length and frame to shield defenders off of the ball and extends well to receive passes in his out-stretched hands.

The real plus in a player like Wells is his future is largely not confined to offense or to catching passes. This is a kid we could easily see either playing at one of the 3rd level defensive positions or even bulking up and playing linebacker. He has a linebacker’s disposition which will serve him well on either side of the ball.

Looking over the roster at Knox Central, the opportunity to see the field for a freshman the caliber of Brody Wells is present. Of the top returning receivers from 2018, only Kevionte Turner will suit up in 2019.

The QB, Brady Worley (181 for 300, for 2,921 yards passing, with 29 passing TDs in 2018) is a class of 2021 prospect so there is someone there to get Wells the football. Leading rusher and KPGFootball, two-time All-Stater, Ethan Mills (2021), returns for his junior year. Mills gained 1,448 yards from scrimmage in 2018 on 244 carries with 16 rushing TDs.

There is meaning to the sum of the above parts. What it means to a football analyst is the Panthers won’t have to lean on the passing game to gain yards. With a running-back like Mills, the third level has to respect it might have to make a play in run-defense, making it less likely to commit to defending downfield routes with the same fervor as a DB would invest in defense of one-dimensional offense.

The season is right around the corner. It is difficult to predict any freshman’s playing time, especially at a Class 4A power the ilk of Knox Central. However, the opportunity looks fairly omnipresent for this particular freshman to enter the lineup early and get some targets.

One thing appears certain, if there is a freshman WR physically ready to step up and play on Friday nights, it is Brody Wells. As the publication which both selects and publishes Kentucky’s freshman All-State football team…Brody Wells, we’ve got our eyes on you!
