2A powerhouse accustomed to playoff success

Tyler Bryant has had to bide his time to get control of the versatile and productive offensive vehicle that is the Breathitt offense. He was handed the keys to the operation this year and he has grown weekly into the role. How far can he steer this ship? With the right breaks, we believe a long, long way.

This is the time of year where every team in 0-0. That is so often said it become trite. Its being trite doesn’t make it any less true.

So here we are, many of us looking over brackets, trying to figure where a win puts us the next week potentially. Here’s what we do know…where a loss puts us; playing basketball.

Tyler Bryant had an incredible first half playing against a quality opponent on the Riverbank Friday night. The Bobcats hosted the Panthers from Knox County Central.

Knox is 4A, beat Bell County (3A, ranked 5th in the RPI) this year, beat Clay County (4A) this year, and beat a 5A South Laurel team this year. Translation, this was a quality opponent that even after losing to 2A Breathitt, is still the 16th highest regarded team in Kentucky’s 4A classification according to the KHSAA’s Ratings Percentage Index (RPI).

The Panthers are just one rung below Hopkinsville in the final RPI. Hopkinsville went to Paducah, Friday night, and came away with a win against a team returning many players from off of last year’s 3A title-game run.

So how good are the Bobcats? For that matter, how good is the Bobcat’s enigmatic, senior signal caller, Tyler Bryant?

Just off of Friday’s first half, pretty darn good. Bryant didn’t do much in half number two, it would have looked unseemly to throw the football around after taking a 51-8 lead into the half-time locker-room.

With the game in question, and performance required, Bryant really performed flawlessly. Bryant completed eight (8) of his 11 passing attempts for 218-yards throwing 6-TD’s against zero thrown INT’s. His longest completion was 55-yards.

One of Breathitt’s coaches, when we posted this on Twitter, noted that two (2) of the three (3)-incompletions were passes which passed right through the intended receivers’ outstretched arms. Ten of his 11 passes were right on the mark. He may have sneezed on passing attempt number 11.

Six (6) TD passes in a half of football puts Bryant’s name in the KHSAA record books. Tyler Bryant’s name will be etched under the name of another great Bobcat, Allen Sperry, his favorite target’s dad (Austin Sperry’s father). Allen threw 7-TD’s against Powell County in a half in 1999.

How significant are six (6) TD passes in one-half of play? You are in the record books for doing it along side former greats like South Warren’s Gavin Spurrier (Steve Spurrier’s grand son), the great Corey Robinson from Lone Oak (who had 91-career TD passes), and Hazard’s Steven Sizemore.

Those guys could all play. So can this one.

So heading into the playoffs, how far will these Bobcats rumble? Will they make the Semis, like in ’19? Might they make Lexington like the teams in ’96, ’97, ’02, and ’08? Will they win the program’s fourth championship to go with the tiles won in ’96, ’97, and ’02?

We were able to talk with Head Football Coach and Director of Athletics, Kyle Moore about his team and its prospects. He told KPGFootball, “I would hate to try and prepare for a team like Breathitt. We can do a lot of things well.”

Moore continued, “This is a tough, hard-nosed group. I don’t think we are going to be a pushover for anyone.”

We can expound on this issue neither much further nor much better, other than to remark to Coach Moore, “Well said.” We can say the following, however; this team has all the ingredients of a team which can travel and make it clear to the title. To do this, it has to catch the right breaks; it has to get the right bounces.

We will just have to see how the cookie crumbles, how the ball bounces.
