’27 LB/DE also thrives in baseball
The Murray High Tigers had a tremendous season last year which would see them play for the title in 2A on Kroger Field. Asa Munsey was particularly prodigious on the defensive side of the ball. The 5’11,” 220-pounder deployed intermittently at DE and LB registered 130-tackles, a pair TFLs, an INT, and a safety. The kid with the 290-pound bench press, 405-pound squat and 425-pound deadlift is a star in more than just football. We believe Munsey will take up residency on the fist base bag when the baseball season arrives. We love versatility at KPGFootball and the Bank of Cadiz. We love multi-phase utility. Basically, we love getting our money’s worth and so do you; that is why you do business with us. Here is a football player, student, and athlete who is giving Murray fans their money’s worth.

’27 DE/LB, Asa Munsey was among the local, young, high school athletes who also rendered a superior performance while achieving exceptional quality this past season. What will this star defender pull off this coming season?
Well, that is the reason Munsey is our featured player of the week. If history should repeat itself, whatever it turns out to be will be special.

Murray, KY: Melvin Cunningham has done a tremendous job moving from West Virginia to Murray, KY to accept the reigns of the Murray High Tiger football program. Among Cunningham’s important duties is to find talent to man the systems he has designed for the Tigers to be success. So far, so good.
Murray High wasn’t an easy job to fill. Murray had just lost Coach Darren Bowling and, while Bowling had won multiple titles in several states, he was wedded to the Wing-T. The Wing-T isn’t for everyone.
It is a type system which requires “Wing-T” type talent to flourish. Needless to say, the Tiger faithful are happier running more modern, adaptable schemes, on both sides of the scrimmage line, than what was being before utilized.
When Cunningham moved to town to take the reins he brought some talent with him. Kenyon Cunningham is quite the prize. He inherited some talent too, especially on defense. One of those inherited talents was Murray High’s Asa Munsey.
Munsey came up from the junior high ranks as celebrated as a first-baseman as a football player. Munsey has continued his interests in both sports. Munsey has flourished in both sports.
Last season, the 5’11,” 220-pound Munsey batted .289 with 26-base hits among his 90-plate appearances. Munsey drove in 18-runs, had four (4) doubles, and four (4) stolen bases in five (5) attempts.
Munsey also toed the rubber, posting a mid-four’s ERA over his 16-pitching appearances. Munsey was even better his junior season on the gridiron.
In football, Munsey registered 130-stops, a pair of TFLs, an INT, and scored a safety. For a 14-1 team which played for the 3A title, that is quite a year indeed.
The Tigers went to Lexington and played (perhaps) the best high school team in Kentucky, at any classification, in the Christian Academy-Louisville (CAL). While that outcome wasn’t what the Tiger faithful were hoping, we don’t know, as we sit here today, it would have been outcome determinative with Robbins under center instead of Kenyon Cunningham. Wyatt Robbins (now at Murray State’s football team) succumbed to injury in the semi-state game with Lloyd Memorial and was unavailable for the title game.
Robbins has graduated. The remainder of the crew will have to carry on in his absence. There is still plenty of talent around Murray, KY to make the Tigers quite formidable in ’26.
Kenyon Cunningham looks to have the reigns to the offense in ’26 and for a few seasons more

We believe Munsey has a future as a two-way, multi-phase performer. Munsey has plenty of explosion and leg kick and his power numbers (290-pound bench press/405-pound squat/425-pound deadlift) are stout and indicative of the work he has put in on his craft.
The Tigers served notice in ’25 that it was a powerhouse 3A program with which to reckon. Murray High will have a target on its back going forward. There is a big difference in being the hunted as opposed to being the hunter.
Can the Coach Cunningham continue the development and run of success his Tigers and he have enjoyed? If it is to do that, it will require sustained brilliant flashes similar to what we saw a season ago from Asa Munsey.
We know this, the Tigers will be excellently coached and excellently prepared. We like this program’s track record. We love this program’s trajectory.
This offseason will go along way in answering questions. Regardless, seeing the answers revealed should prove entirely interesting.
Let’s just hope Asa Munsey continues to demonstrate the marked improvement he has shown thus far. That would really get this program off on the right foot in 2026!
