Bryce Blackerby is our Big Man on the eCampus for this week @Oakley_Watkins, @bigassfans, @eCampusdotcom, @khsaafootball, @KyHighFootball

Blackerby has shown plenty of promise for the Eagles

College coaches prefer recruiting athletes who compete in a multitude of sports as opposed to just attempting to specialize in one. No less than former Alabama head football coach, Nick Saban, arguably among the finest college football coaches in the sport’s history, was known for being adamant that he preferred athletes who played multiple sports because it provided different competitive situations, led to well-rounded athletes, and was a sign of a competitor. Saban also said early specialization in one sport can lead to burnout and is (actually) less valuable than having athletes who have experiences in diverse athletic environments. It is important, and stressed by LCA’s administration, that kids should compete in as many sports as they wish and prove able. Bryce Blackerby contributes in multiple sports for the Eagles and, as a matter of fact, is considered as much or more of a prospect in baseball as he is in football. Enjoy this look at a ’29 QB is who backing up one of Kentucky’s finest but still has to be ready, week after week, should duty call.

eCampus.com was built on a simple idea: make textbooks affordable, convenient, and accessible for every student. Founded in 1999 in Lexington, KY and backed by visionary investors like Wendy’s founder Dave Thomas, the company has grown into a premier online textbook retailer for high school and college students nationwide.

Their mission has always been supporting student success both on and off the field through affordable access to the course materials they need. eCampus.com is excited to invest in our student-athletes through Kentucky Prep Gridiron (KPGFootball) which was founded to promote and assist young high school football players get promoted to “next level,” college football opportunities.

That is why eCampus.com sponsors the KPGFootballBig Man on the eCampus series. This week’s Big Man on the eCampus is Lexington Christian Academy athlete, Collin Hensley, (’27).

Collin Hensley is primary known as a footballer but has shown flashes as a shooting guard in basketball at the high school level. Hensley was a top-flight defensive player during the title run in 2025 and was effective, when targeted on offense, in the passing game.

We would like to see more offense from Hensley as a senior. He is clearly capable.

Lexington Christian Academy (LCA) perennially competes for KHSAA championships at its level of play. Players developing into stars, like Hensley, has a ton to do with the program’s success.

Lexington, KY: Bryce Blackerby is a rising sophomore (’29) and is a 5’11,” QB known equally throughout the Bluegrass as a promising prospect on the baseball diamond as well as the gridiron. Blackerby got nine (9) games of varsity run at QB for one of the more loaded rosters in the KHSAA.

On the year, in spot and mop-up duty, Blackerby completed four (4) of his eight (8) passing attempts for 119-yards and a pair of TDs. Imagine averaging nearly 30-yards a completion (29.75 to be exact) and a TD every other completion. This kid needs some more opportunities.

It is hard to warrant playing Blackerby too much. Blackerby played behind All-State QB, Nash Whelan (’28). All Whelan did a year ago was throw for close to 2,300-yards and 26-TDs against only six (6) INTs.

Whelan completed 156 of his 239 passing attempts (66%) and, unlike a lot of other QBs, led the team in rushing with 1,000-yards on 135-carries (7.41-yards per) while scoring 14-rushing TDs. Whelan was equal parts QB and RB.

Whelan is a member of one of the KHSAA’s best ’28 classes at LCA. The ’29s don’t look far behind. Blackerby getting nine (9) games of varsity run on that roster is pretty remarkable.

The most important statistic about any player in LCA’s QB room was Whelan’s leading the Eagles to the 2A title, its second all-time. In the end, that is the statistic people remember most about any QB.

Blackerby is a kid with good length and a high football IQ. Blackerby is athletic, polishing off a 50-15-2 in the USSSA Baseball events last summer.

LCA, or Lexington Christian Academy to some, has one of the more athletically skilled rosters competing in football across the commonwealth of Kentucky. LCA is considered young with a great ’27 class returning next season and one of the better classes of ’28s and ’29s in Kentucky.

Among the ’28s, Matthew Montgomery is one of the finest in the class at the OL position, Kentucky-wide. Nash Whelan is a dual-threat guy who has gotten better and better.

Dawson Farmer is a guy who is came on as the playoffs arrived and had a particularly strong offensive performance in the season’s last game against a Louisville 6A ball club in Pleasure Ridge Park (PRP). Blackerby is a guy who had limited opportunity but did the most with the chances given. him.

LCA football a valuable and recog-
nizable brand

The ’27s include players like Sam Pearson; Bennett Gudalis, the club’s second leading rusher; and Aiden Lyons, who leads the team in tackles and is among the club leaders in TFLs. What we are telling you is simply this, the Eagles will be good again next year and probably for several seasons after that.

Blackerby carries himself and wears his pads well. While Blackerby doesn’t quite have the heft some of his teammates possess, it hasn’t impacted his performance. Other players make excuses; Blackerby just makes plays.

LCA worked hard to climb to a title in 2025 from a slow start. The Eagles had lost three in a row to powerhouses Christian Academy-Louisville, Boyle County, and Franklin County prior to getting on a win streak which would take the program to its second title at the 2A classification.

Bryce Blackerby is a football and baseball prospect

Friday Night Fletch

Beginning with the “Holy War” with Lexington Catholic, the Eagles rode a win-streak and climbed its way to the tippy-top. The staff did an excellent job of insuring the team was both ready to play, regardless of opponent, and executing in fine form each and every week.

The Eagles are a consistent title contender in the 2A classification. The Eagles always seem to round into playoff form at just the right time.

Obviously, the jury is still out on whether Blackerby is or isn’t a next level athlete at least in football. His baseball prowess appears more certain among those who are “in the know.”

Should Blackerby demonstrate the ability to play collegiately in either football or baseball, it will be directly related to his work ethic and willingness to make the necessary sacrifices to continue to develop along his present trajectory. There are plenty of coaches who believe Blackerby is a next level guy in several sports.

We know this, Blackerby’s performance, last season, only strengthened (in our minds) our willingness to predict his future success. We also believe Blackerby to be a strong, academic performer; possessing excellent class standing and sure-fire qualifying credentials for the NCAA Clearinghouse.

For now, Blackerby is one final thing, in addition to all the other skills and assets we have highlighted. Blackerby is among the best athletes and baseball prospects in the KHSAA’s ’29 graduating class in addition to his being our eCampus.comBig Man on the eCampus feature of the week!
