’28 Tripp Setliff at Huntington High, could we see him in the KHSAA before all is said and done? @setlifftripp, @Mikesetliff3, @khsaafootball @KyHighFootball, @minguabeefjerky, @bigassfans

’28 center/OL is a guy whose gaining in athleticism and agility

Miner's lady, stranger to blue water

Tripp Setliff is a 6’0,” 275-pounder who has been turning some heads in the Huntington, WV area. Here’s the thing, Paul Blazer High in Ashland, Kentucky is a short drive across the Ohio River from Huntington (two areas about 16-miles apart). Could we see Setliff migrate that direction? “Mr. Football,” Isaac Dixon (Belfry ’21), was from West Virginia, so was former UK Wildcat and Belfry Pirate, Dave Jones. What we are trying to say is, it’s been before done. Setliff played two years on the “Kentucky Future Stars” team, so it isn’t exactly like he doesn’t know anyone over here. This one may be worth monitoring. One thing we do know, this is a quality, young interior guy.

Huntington, WV: John Denver released a song about West Virginia. In that song, Denver and two people named “Danoff,” Taffy and William, wrote about being called back to West Virginia from far away places.

Perhaps among the more poignant lyrics written by these three were the following:

🎶I hear her voice in the mornin' hour, she calls me
The radio reminds me of my home far away,
Drivin' down the road, I get a feelin' that I should've been home yesterday, yesterday
...🎶

We are hoping, as fans of the KHSAA and Kentucky High School football, that Tripp Setliff may heed a slightly different call. We are hoping he gets called to his “Old Kentucky Home.”

Setliff is a kid who played on the middle school, all-star circuit and represented the commonwealth of Kentucky for two years in the Future Stars game. Someone tell those Huntington folks we Kentuckians don’t take a shinin’ to our talent taking off the Kentucky “blue” jersey to migrate to WV to play HS football.

Setliff is a young prospect who has a ton going for him. This would include the over half ton the kid can bench, deadlift, power clean, and back squat.

Setliff attended a recent Prep Red Zone combine in West Virginia. The PRZ people were right impressed.

Setliff, though a freshman when competing, left with an OL “Top Performer” distinction. Setliff got a little bloodied in the one on ones but still finished strong. Point is…Setliff competed.

Setliff has been working on his movement. The 6’0,” 275-pounder plays any of the three interior OL slots; but, projects as an offensive center at the next level. He runs the 40-yard dash in 5.9-seconds, shuttles (5-10-5) in 5.6-seconds, has a broad jump of 6’2,” and a 24-inch vertical.

Those are all numbers which have to improve, quite a bit, if he wants to sell himself to college programs as sufficiently athletic, quick, and mobile enough to play center on a college football team. Remember, he is just about to enter the summer between his freshman/sophomore years.

Setliff’s working on it. He has plenty of time.

Setliff is doing impressive work in the weight room. Setliff has some lifts on his X-account a recruiter should see. We have linked it two separate places in this very article for your viewing convenience.

Suffice it to say, Setliff’s power and strength are a little ahead of his movement. Like we said, he is working on it.

We believe this is a kid who has tremendous upside. We also believe this is a kid many Kentucky High Schools would love to luck into rostering.

Who knows, even if we don’t get him back for high school, we have 17-colleges in the commonwealth which field football teams; perhaps then the 🎶…sun will shine bright on [his] Old Kentucky Home…🎶 (Stephen Foster, 1852).
