We thought we had concluded our “Slow Motion Replay” series and then a colleague reached out to me and said “What about Ben Pumphrey?” We researched it and couldn’t have agreed more. Pumphrey was among the more fun and charismatic coaches the KHSAA has ever known. He was also a guy who traveled the commonwealth taking hard jobs, jobs many of his colleagues didn’t want. Pumphrey did it to make a difference and what a difference he made. Pumphrey was enshrined in the KHSAA Hall of Fame in 2004 and richly, deservedly. Today he is being featured by us. Again, his being featured by Friday Night Fletch and KPGFootball is richly and deservedly past due. Enjoy this edition of the Slow Motion Replay series. Be aware, there is no telling where this series will actually end and when. We will keep writing them as long as you care to read them.

Shannon Lofton came out of MS and led his Region I, Battle of the Region, team to the tournament championship. Region I has been gaining in both stature and prestige in that tournament as Region I high schools have been benefitting from the boost in talent being added to the roster each Fall. Shannon Lofton is a guy who should break out onto the high school scene for the Cardinals this year and in a big, big way. You will hear of him plenty this coming season. Enjoy the feature.

Logan Smith is a dude. If you haven’t read the book “Football 101: Boo-Boo’s a Quarterback” that may be an empty reference for you. However, the link to buy the book will be at the bottom of the page of this very article, so no reason to stay in the dark. Smith has made the All-WKC three straight years and was Calloway’s Defensive POY a year ago. Smith will be laboring under a new staff in ’25 (Coby Lewis) and we believe that may be a match made in heaven. Enjoy the feature.

Line play can be hard to evaluate. When evaluating linemen, as the offensive variety really don’t have much in the way of statistics beyond “games played” and “pancakes” (if the team keeps such a statistic and not all do), one often has to look for characteristics of line dominance in making a decision regarding who to offer. Strength, power, feet agility, balance, speed, spacial quickness, hand quickness, punching power are all examples of characteristics sought. If there is a “Field Event” likely to build explosion, we are told it is the Shot Put. Well Stanfield is a football player who also throws the Shot an throws it well especially for a ’25 prospect. Lleyton Penn was the “Ace Hardware Throwback Player of the Year.” That appears to be one of the more appropriately awarded awards we have ever seen any one company bestow. This guy is a linemen’s lineman. We believe he will have a big senior year and he will have opportunities to keep the party going in college should he choose. Enjoy this feature. HB.
