Austin Oppel is a former Team Kentucky Future Star who we have followed on KPGFootball for years. He is tearing up the 6A classification and has the Green Wave looking to get out to a 2-0 start. This week’s “Revolutionary Player of the Week” is a top-flight, 2022 DE playing for Bowling Green (Senior) High School. His name is Bridger Knee and, if his name sounds familiar it should, we have featured him several times. He will have a very big year in Class 5A, District 2, if he builds on what he did over his sophomore season. This feature is brought to you weekly by the folks over at Independence Bank. “No sir, you ain’t moving ‘Big Baby’ nowhere!” I remember hearing Kentucky Future Stars’ Director yell this at Team Kentucky camp three years ago like it was yesterday. Jason Perry, who will be a 9th-grader in the Fall of 2020, has enrolled to play at Breathitt County HS. So what, he just a freshman? Man, if you think that, you don’t know much about Team Kentuckians and what adding some of those does for any high school roster. You, primarily, need to read this article and try to learn something. Uriah Virzi is a championship wrestler, a Regional Player of the Year in the KYMSFA, a Team Kentucky player, and a MS All-Stater. What he isn’t is a normal middle school football player or even a normal middle schooler. Most players at his level of development, and who have worked as hard as he, have left normalcy long ago. Gough is used to doing things well before anyone thinks he can. He started at one of Kentucky’s premier high-school programs as a freshman, he set the school’s single-season tackle mark as a sophomore, he made the AP All-State Football First-Team as a sophomore. The list just never seems to end. When he broke his leg the projections were he would be through for the year. Well, in keeping with Gough tradition, he was cleared to return to action in game 9. This makes him available for the playoffs, rested and full speed. Owensboro, at 8-1, was winning even without its marquee superstar. Imagine what they will do in the playoff run with him. Boggles the mind, doesn’t it?
We make no bones about it, Joshuah Keith is the best QB in the class of 2024 anywhere in Kentucky in our opinion. He may be 2024’s very best football player too. A lot of what makes him different is his poise and football IQ. Than there is an 8th grader who runs in the high 4.6’s, low 4.7’s, in the 40 and shuttles in a blistering 4.0-flat. Of course his throwing a HS ball 59-yards this summer in Knoxville at the Gunslinger Challenge didn’t hurt his reputation either. We love to scour the statistics and then glorify the skill players who compile them. Many of these skill players become our heroes, our kids’ heroes. We forget that Johnny QB or Johnny RB didn’t just run out on the field and run over the defensive 11, single-handily. Someone or 5 particular “someones” have to bust their butts for recognition from only the most knowledgeable few. We love offensive linemen at KPGFootball and Logan Smith is one of our favorites Kentucky-wide. Corbin is very good offensively and the Logan Smiths along its OL is why. Enjoy the article. HB
Hayes Preston didn’t make the Team Kentucky Future Stars-6th grade team but was an alternate. We know what Hayes can do and we still believe him to be among the very best football players in Kentucky in his graduating class. We can say this because look at everything else he has done. Not everyone in football thrives in shorts and shirts running around cones. Some people need to pad-up and thud-up for the evaluator to get a complete and accurate look at what the kid can do as a football player. We think our buddy, Ricco Hughes, missed one here. We miss on far more guys than he does. Nobody’s perfect, though he is pretty close.
There wasn’t much about Kentucky’s offensive performance versus Tennessee in the Future Stars Classic which we didn’t find…offensive, frankly. If there was a bright spot it was the play of Braden Myers from Pulaski County, Kentucky. Myers snap arrived on a pulse beat all afternoon, every single time, exactly where you would want it. He manned the A-gap, a hot bed of activity along any front so well you forgot he was out there and he showed great mobility moving down to the second level to pick up big blocks for Kentucky there. This kid firmly established that the formerly two man race for the class’s top offensive center between Bracken Castle and Matt Alex Ladd is now firmly a three man race and there may be a new leader in the clubhouse.
