This prospect has been likened to Wandale Robinson. We watch him and believe him to be more of a Jay Becherer clone. Some of these guys play for lower level teams which routinely challenge for titles at the respective classifications and others play for teams playing in large classifications where freshmen rarely see Friday Night action. Brenden Anthony is one of Kentucky’s very finest at the MLB position Kentucky-wide in the ’25 class. We think he gets some varsity burn this year even though a freshman attempting to mesh into one of the most talented rosters at that classification of play. It is not every day you have rising ninth-grade “Bigs” who appear destined to challenge for early playing time. Then again, not every program has them coming out of MS 6-3, 290, highly decorated at the level of play the player is leaving, and already being followed on Twitter by college programs intent on recruiting the young player in the “not too distant” future. Uriah Virzi is a championship wrestler, a Regional Player of the Year in the KYMSFA, a Team Kentucky player, and a MS All-Stater. What he isn’t is a normal middle school football player or even a normal middle schooler. Most players at his level of development, and who have worked as hard as he, have left normalcy long ago. Today, all over Kentucky, is the first day teams have been able to wear what the KHSAA calls “shells.” What gear constitutes “shells” is set out in Bylaw 23 and its subparts. “Shells” are defined as shorts, helmet, and shoulder pads. Judging from some social media postings we have viewed in advance of today, some of you were confused as to exactly when you could add shoulder pads to your practice equipment. We watched one middle school video of a member school practicing in “shells” last week. Anyway, the donning of shoulder pads means different things to different players so we sent out a query to some of Kentucky’s best high school players to see what, if anything, it signified to them. This article contains what we received back from some of the players asked.
