Storm Warning: Central to host Trigg County in Mortons Gap for pivotal, district contest @_CoachManning, @HopkinsCentral. @sfitz_840whas, @840WHAS, @minguabeefjerky, @bigassfans

Here's your Storm Warning, our weekly scouting report on The Storm's football program

Last year’s game in Cadiz spilled over into the parking lot

These two teams are playing for their playoff lives as only four of district one’s six teams will make the postseason. Last year, it was these same two teams who stayed home. This season, both of these teams have beaten Webster County who looks to have taken the position in the district cellar waiting to see which team will occupy the cellar’s upper-chamber. The winner of this game will probably have earned itself a postseason appearance on the road to either Morganfield or Hawesville, Kentucky. The loser may need to start early preparation for high school basketball.

Morton’s Gap, KY: Every heard the old saying, “Necessity is the mother of invention?” One of the earliest recorded instances of that particular proverb is in one of Aesop’s Fables, The Crow and the Pitcher, from the mid 6th century BCE.

Plato’s Republic says “our need will be the real creator.” Benjamin Jowett’s 1894 translation of that work rendered the saying loosely as “The true creator is necessity, who is the mother of our invention.”

Two teams are meeting tomorrow night in dire need of a win. The winner appears to have locked up a playoff berth. The loser is preparing for basketball.

We are going to take a look at this matchup and attempt to pick its winner. We are well over 80% this season, so perhaps you should listen to us.

Scouting the Wildcats

Coming into the season, the Wildcats boasted perhaps the best backfield weapon in his graduating class, Kentucky-wide, in ’28’s Timothy Williams. Williams got hurt early on and the Wildcats have turned to another freshman phenom at QB in Caden Scott. Scott, a ’28 QB, has thrown for over 400-yards on the year with 6-TDs against 3-picks. In other words he has proven he ain’t no dog!

He’s darn Gude!

Davaree Gude has proven himself among the better RBs in western KY in the ’26 class. Gude is closing in on a second, consecutive, thousand yard rushing season and leads the ground forces in TDs rushing. He’s over 900-yards rushing on the season and looks likely to break the 1,000-yard plateau on Morton’s Gap Friday night.

Joshaun Bridges is second in rushing with around 400-yards on the ground. Bridges is a stalwart for the Wildcat defense on top of what he contributes offensively.

Brody Renfroe is a weapon at PK. Renfroe is 10 for 11 on PATs and perfect on FGs ( one for one). Renfroe is tied for 1st in INT’s, showing he is much more than just a specialist.

Brody Calhoun, ’27, leads the team in tackles.

Let’s look at The Storm

Hopkins County Central moved Isaac Earl to slot and Sylas Gunn to QB. The move has paid huge dividends as this is not the same Storm squad which opened the year.

Central is coming off a 48-46 OT loss to McLean in Calhoun, KY. McLean is the third best team in the first district and looks assured of getting to postseason along with Hancock County and Union County.

Trigg has yet to play McLean. The Wildcats get that privilege October 25th in Cadiz.

Common district opponent

Both teams have played Webster County. Trigg beat Webster in Cadiz, 37-21. Central beating Webster in Morton’s Gap, 29-0.

Consulting the experts

The oldest ratings index in all of Kentucky is the DRI (Durden Ratings Index). That particular index was 54-6 a week ago, so its performance demands attention, if nothing else.

According to the DRI, Hopkins County Central has an index of 42.4. Trigg County’s index is 40.4. The game is being played in Morton’s Gap, so the DRI would say pick Central’s “Storm.”

We have also consulted our index back at the office. It is coming off a 12-3 week (80%) so it remains hot as the weeks progress.

Our algorithm says Central is one-point better than Trigg County on a neutral field with a 53% chance of winning. Our algorithm can’t account for Central’s improvement and new deployments which should increase Central’s chances together with being at home.

Last Year’s Game

Last year’s game was a 40-14 blowout (in favor of the Storm) in Cadiz, KY which spilt out into the parking lot after the game. Neither team is the team it was a year ago, but look for tempers to flare once more at the end of this one. Bring your brass knuckles. Just kidding!

Our Call

We like the Storm in this game 35-28.
